Spotify wants more fans. After offering a free, shuffle-based version of its music streaming service on iOS and Android, it’s now tempting college students in the US with 50 percent off a new Premium subscription. Spotted by Recode, the offer is valid for up to 12 months and to qualify, students will need to give their name, where they’re currently enrolled, date of birth and any other documents requested by verification service SheerID. It brings the total cost down from $9.99 to $4.99 per month. In 2012, Spotify teamed up with the National Union of Students (NUS) in the UK…

Sony will not use Google’s recently announced Android Wear operating system for its wearable devices, like the SmartWatch 2, the company has reportedly confirmed to CNET. According to the report, head of Sony Mobile in the US Ravi Nookala, said that rather than use Android Wear, the company would persevere with its own SmartWatch platform – which is based on Android, but provides its own app store – after having already invested time and resources in the initiative. The move is in sharp contrast to rival device makers like LG and Motorola, both of which have already unveiled smartwatches based on Android…

CodeBunk, a platform for collaborative coding and feedback, has announced that it now supports a range of new programming languages. As well as being a shared space for coding, the service is aimed primarily at bringing the tech recruitment space up to speed. The company says that online interviews are the norm in the tech industry but that the hiring processes for technical roles normally involve several rounds of interviews using tools like Skype, Collabedit/Google Docs, and a final review process where the code is checked by the interviewer. CodeBunk, on the other hand, provides all of these tools in…

Candy Crush Saga creators King may have canned plans to trademark the word ‘Candy’ in the US, but its application to own rights to the word in the EU remains very much intact. King acquired the trademark in the EU for ‘Candy’ from a company that had entered bankruptcy, before word spread in January this year that it had been approved with specific reference to video games and clothing.
