Quotable

"The international coalition launched its war on Gaddafi on Purim. Gadaffy says this is more proof that Al-Qaida is behind this colonialist, zionist crusade. I say that's more proof Khadafi's had his head in the hot desert sand for too long." ~ Yasha Harari

This past weekend we welcomed a bunch of young and ambitious designers, artists and photographers to our offices in Amsterdam for a long weekend of hard work on our latest issue of SHIFT. The work included usual activities like making photos, deciding on design and layout and a lot of photography. This weekend was more diverse though. We also biked around town, climbed across some rooftops, practiced some (special kind of) yoga and made a lot of drawings. The result is a nice collection of original artwork, articles and fresh design. Some parts look like a photography magazine, others focus…

BBC-645x250
The BBC updated its iPlayer Radio for iOS app today with a handful of useful new features, making what was already an impressive piece of software just a little bit sweeter. Favorites is the biggest addition, giving radio enthusiasts the ability to save their favorite shows for easy access later. They’re added by tapping the information symbol (shown with a white “i”) next to any listing, followed by the favorites option on the back of the card. Chosen shows are then stored in a dedicated tab at the bottom of the screen; the Alarm option that used to be in…

3 myths about keeping your startup a secret

A padlock closes a wooden door at a grav
This post originally appeared on the Clarity.fm blog and has been republished with permission. “Transparency” has become a buzzword in the startup world. Many companies are sharing things previously deemed top secret—their web traffic sources, employee compensation, and project management processes. This is great. It allows those in the startup world to build a community, help each other, and ultimately make more companies successful. Even so, there are many leaders that believe this sort of sharing could drag them down. When I was a student entrepreneur, I was always worried that leaking my company secrets would put us at risk….

US-ENTERTAINMENT-IT-E3
Nvidia and IBM today announced a high-speed interconnect called NVLink which dramatically improves data movement between the CPU and GPU. The new technology will be integrated into Nvidia’s future GPUs, starting with its Pascal GPU architecture expected to be introduced in 2016, as well as IBM’s future versions of its Power CPUs. The companies claim NVLink enables GPUs and CPUs to share data five to 12 times faster than they can today, eliminating what they call “a longstanding bottleneck.” The duo believes the innovation will help pave the way for a new generation of exascale supercomputers that are 50 to…
