Songza, the New York-based music streaming service, is now using weather data to deliver music to you after inking a deal with The Weather Company, parent to The Weather Channel. This means that on top of facilitating music discovery based on day, time, device type, location and past behavior, Songza can now suggest songs to you according to the state of mind you’re in based on the weather. If you’ve ever wanted some suitable music to keep you company during a thunderstorm, Songza may very well be able to do it now. In case you’re unfamiliar with it, Songza distinguishes itself within the…

Exactly one year ago, Flipboard rolled out ‘version two’ of its magazine-inspired news reader service with a new tool that meant readers could create and share their own publications. Today, the company celebrated the feature’s first anniversary by announcing that over 7 million magazines have now been created by its users. These “magazines” are comprised of one or more articles that users have bookmarked for safe keeping on Flipboard. Magazines  can be given a name and shared externally to other social networks, and it’s also possible for multiple people to work on the same publication, rather like a collaborative pinboard on Pinterest….

UpTo Calendar for iOS fully redesigned to include layers and per-event sharing with friends

UpTo, the social calendar app for iOS has been fully redesigned and relaunched today to include a layered calendar view and more granular sharing options. While we previously called out the potential of this calendar app back in 2012, it seems the company wasn’t quite happy with the overall look and feel as time progressed. As a result, today’s update (version 3.0) puts a far sleeker, minimal design front-and-center, but keeps the social elements in the background for when you need them. Currently available only for iOS devices, the app includes an overview of a user’s own meetings as the…

Pipes: a simple mobile news reader for tracking individual topics

Pipes
News apps really aren’t in short supply at the moment, and with Flipboard’s visually-led design sitting as the poster boy for wannabe contenders, it’s unsurprising to see a few similar-feeling apps hit the market. One of the newest entrants is Pipes for Android and iOS, a news aggregator that allows users to search for individual topics, people, items or anything else, and then create a channel of news specific to that. But with Flipboard (and others) already offering this sort of filtering, what else has Pipes got to offer? Getting started! Getting started is easy. And free. All you need to…

Music streaming app Bloom.fm hits 1M registered users in the UK, will launch a Web player next month

Bloom.fm now has one million people registered for its music streaming service in the UK. After launching on iOS in January 2013, followed by Android last September, the company has doubled its user base in the last four months. While Bloom.fm is only available in the UK at the moment, it offers a fresh take on the highly competitive music streaming space. A Pandora-style radio service is free of charge, while on-demand streaming similar to Spotify, Rdio and Beats Music is priced at 13.99 per month (£10 if you sign up on the Web). In between are two separate tiers,…
