The Next Web is relaunching as The Nostalgic Web, because the future is overrated

AOL
We’re a forward-looking bunch at The Next Web – our name screams ‘the future’, after all. But in the light of revelations of widespread online government surveillance and our increasing realization that technology will eventually grow too smart and kill us all, we’ve become wary of what’s ahead. All these bad vibes got us thinking about the past. The Internet was much more fun before spies worked out how to track us all, before your phone could talk back to you and before selfies became a ‘thing’. What’s more, all of our rival publications spend their time looking at the…

Dragon
Voice recognition and control system specialist Nuance has released an update for its Dragon Mobile Assistant app for Android that introduces voice unlocking of a handset for the first time, as well as a couple of other minor updates. To use the new voice unlock feature, you just need to teach the app your voice by saying ‘Hello, Dragon’ three times and it then locks on to your own personal voice print. From here on out, the phone will only respond to your voice. Once taught, every time you say “Hello, Dragon”, it will open the app ready for further voice commands…

Power to the people: TNW Conference Europe celebrates the people’s revolution

pttp(1920x1200)
The Next Web Conference has never had a special theme. TNW is simply about ‘the next Web’ and what will happen next is partly revealed by our speakers, partly by our audience and partly not decided at all. The reason why we never named a theme upfront is that we can never truly imagine what an upcoming edition holds in store. What we do know is that our speakers are always perfectly capable of presenting a glimpse of the Internet’s future. That’s because they study technology trends and their impact on business and culture on a daily basis or decide on…

Good news for European startups: Balderton Capital, the VC firm that has invested in the likes of LoveFilm, MySQL and Betfair, has raised $305 million for its fifth European fund, bringing its total European investment funds to $2.2 billion. Balderton is one of the veterans of the European tech scene, initially operating as Benchmark Capital Europe before rebranding in 2007. The total value of its previously-backed companies amounts to more than $10 billion. It says the latest funds will be used for Series A investments where it sees “the best opportunities for long-term investments in high potential companies.” The fund…
