Satya Nadella Delivers Opening Keynote At Microsoft Build Conference
At its Build 2014 conference today, Microsoft announced universal Windows apps, which work across PCs, phones, tablets and even the Xbox One. In other words, the Windows runtime in Windows 8.1 Update 1 will be available to Windows Phone developers. This is a huge announcement for developers looking to build apps on Windows. David Treadwell, Microsoft CVP of Operating Sytems Group, talked about five areas the company focused on when trying to streamline the development process: User Interface, App Model, APIs, Tools, and Store. At its Build 2014 conference today, Microsoft underlined new enterprise features in Windows Phone 8.1. These include support for enterprise VPN, S/MIME encryption, and new mobile device management (MDM) capabilities. Nick Hedderman, a global product marketing manager at Microsoft, showed off each of the three on the fly. The first was enterprise VPN, which means the user can access sites  strictly for employees. It uses the standard browser and allows users to bypass firewalls. Taking this one step further, users can swipe down and access the new Action Center – Microsoft’s equivalent of a notification center – and save VPN…

At its Build 2014 conference today, Microsoft unveiled Windows 8.1 Update 1, coming via Windows Update on April 8. New features include an improved Taskbar, better task switching, and Start Screen tweaks that focus on mouse and keyboard users. In short, modern (“Metro”) apps now have Taskbar buttons and title bars. Microsoft has also pre-pinned the Windows Store to the Start Screen. The store itself has also been revamped to be more mouse-and-keyboard friendly for discovering and downloading apps. Cotap goes premium with its enterprise mobile messaging service

Cotap, a business-focused mobile messaging app created by former Yammer executives, has begun offering a premium version of its service that lets company administrators manage employee accounts. As before, users can sign up for free access to Cotap with their work emails, but companies that pay for the service will tap into an admin console with analytics, account management and data export options.
