The NSA reportedly exploited Heartbleed for 2 years, but government denies it [Updated]

When news first broke of the devastating Heartbleed bug in the OpenSSL encryption standard, speculation immediately arose that governments had known about the flaw and taken advantage of it for their own surveillance efforts. A new report from Bloomberg claims that the US National Security Agency has been exploiting Heartbleed for at least two years. An NSA spokesperson declined to comment to Bloomberg on the allegations. Update: The NSA has issued a statement on Twitter. Statement: NSA was not aware of the recently identified Heartbleed vulnerability until it was made public. — NSA/CSS (@NSA_PAO) April 11, 2014 While the report lacks…

Box launches an open source initiative to give back to the community

Box today announced a new initiative to contribute some of its projects back to the open source community. CEO Aaron Levie said in a tweet: “Box couldn’t exist without open source projects. We’re announcing Box Open Source to now give back our own.” You can browse the company’s projects at opensource.box.com or on GitHub. Box has been steadily releasing the source code for projects over the past few months, so this isn’t a brand new endeavor, but the public announcement from Levie does help demonstrate the firm’s commitment to the open source software cause. ➤ Box Open Source

The social media frequency guide: How often should you post?

heart frequency
This post originally appeared on the Buffer blog. Subway has this sandwich with Fritos on it. I know this because their commercials play constantly on my TV and computer such that I nearly have the ads memorized. Every time their commercial airs, Subway is flirting with the fine art of frequency. How often is too often to share with your audience? Social media marketers face the same dilemma. We want to connect with followers without driving them away. We aim for the perfect balance of sharing and listening. I end up guessing a lot, trying and testing new variations on how often I should post. If…

Google Translate now makes it easier for you to edit and improve translations

Apr11

Google has introduced, or is at least trialing, a new feature that makes it easier for users to edit results in Google Translate. As the unofficial Google Operating System blog notes, there’s now an ‘Improve This Translation’ button in the results pane that lets you edit the entire outcome. When you click this, and make your edit, a message reads: “Your contribution will be used to improve translation quality and may be shown to users anonymously.” Prior to this latest editing feature, users could already highlight and click individual words and phrases from the translated text and choose from an…

What I learned in my first year as a female startup CEO

Yunha-Kim-Locket-e1381796925189
Yunha Kim is the founder and CEO of Locket, a San Francisco-based startup that’s changing the way we use our lock screens. This post originally appeared on Kim’s Medium blog. What is it like to be a female in tech? I think the industry is really curious about this topic — almost so much so that we appear committed to proving how different (or perhaps difficult) it is to be a female CEO. If a reporter asks me why it sucks to be a female CEO, I can come up with hundreds of reasons. On the other hand, if I am asked to argue…
