Netflix to invade E3 (and it might be bringing new games with it)

Netflix revealed today that it was going to host a panel at E3, of all things. It’s not-so-subtly hinting at an interest in games, which it’s been developing for several months despite outwardly expressing the opposite. If nothing else, I’d be curious to see what its idea of a Netflix show-to-video game adaptation would look like, given its recent ventures in interactive film. The NX on Netflix Twitter account, which promotes the platform’s fantasy and sci-fi titles, did that thing where it tweets at another verified company account, in this case the E3 account. Getting hype for #E32019. Hey @E3,…

No, end-to-end encryption isn’t a marketing gimmick

There’s bad takes, and then there’s bad takes. An example of the latter comes from Bloomberg Opinion columnist Leonid Bershidsky, who thinks that today’s WhatsApp security woes proves that end-to-end encryption is “a gimmick” and “largely pointless.” WhatsApp is one of the largest messaging apps around. To put Bershidsky’s comments in context, earlier today, it transpired that it was possible to use specially-weaponized phone calls in order to install malware on a target’s phone. The Facebook-owned company has since released a patch, which users are encouraged to install at the earliest possible opportunity. WhatsApp, like many messaging apps, uses end-to-end…

Saddle up: Red Dead Online finally exits beta with massive new update

Rockstar today revealed Red Dead Online is finally exiting the beta stage, and it’s bringing a wagonload of new stuff with it. From new playing modes to punishing murders to full-on role-playing, what was originally a fairly blasé add-on to Red Dead Redemption 2 looks like it might finally be a game worth playing by itself. I remember a time when we were all kind of apprehensive about Red Dead Online. Back around the time RDR2 was teased, the online multiplayer component was revealed before just about anything else, and, if the reaction of my peers was typical, no one was quite sure what to…

BitDefender researchers discover terrifying security vulnerability in Intel CPUs

May14

Researchers from Romanian security firm BitDefender have uncovered a troubling security vulnerability in Intel processors that could allow an attacker to access privileged kernel-mode information typically considered “off limits” for most applications. An exploit for the vulnerability has been proven to work on Intel’s Ivy Bridge, Haswell, Skylake, and Kaby Lake processors. This is the most recent CPU-level vulnerability discovered in Intel’s silicon. In 2018, researchers announced the discovery of two bugs, Spectre and Meltdown, which exploited vulnerabilities in modern speculative execution features in order to access parts of the memory. Both of those issues were resolved – or, perhaps…
