Skype today announced it is making group video calling (GVC) available free of charge on Windows desktop, OS X, and the Xbox One. At the same time, the company is also promising it will enable group video calling across all platforms at no cost “in the future.” We talked to Phillip Snalune, Skype’s General Manager of Consumer Product Marketing, to learn more, and he specifically listed apps for the following platforms: Windows modern (read: Metro app), Windows Phone, Android, and iOS. Unfortunately, he refused to share exact timing details. Snalune also wouldn’t disclose how much revenue the feature has generated…

GoogleCar
The utopian vision of self-driving cars quietly humming along our roads is nothing new, but much of the work tends to focus on testing a system’s ability to drive a car along a freeway, rather than more tricky busy city streets. The nine tech companies joining the ELITE program, which launched today, are Amplience, Graze, Intrinsic, Medic Animal, Money Dashboard, Naked Wines, Post Code Anywhere, Test Plant and Unruly Media. The scheme will provide each of these with “business support tools”, access to group advisors and investors, and education services provided by Imperial College Business School. The program also has the backing of trade bodies like the CBI and Tech City, among others. “Small and medium sized businesses are the lifeblood…

nokia
Nokia’s devices and services unit is now owned by Microsoft and to celebrate the company has released a new advert on YouTube. Sporting the tagline ‘Not Like Everybody Else’, it uses a track by English rock band The Kinks to highlight Nokia’s expertise in industrial design. In a street drained of color, one brightly dressed pedestrian grabs his yellow Lumia 1020, adorns a matching pair of headphones and strolls down the road – causing passersby to be paralyzed by sheer shock and awe. It’s a slick advert that embraces the position of the Windows Phone platform. Microsoft’s mobile OS is…
