Microsoft’s AI hallucinates unique whisky flavors

When whisky is made in Scotland it’s called scotch. When it’s made in Kentucky it’s called whiskey – the Irish also add the “E”. But when it’s made in Sweden, based on a recipe created by Microsoft‘s AI, we just call it amazing. Swedish distillery Mackmyra Whisky, technology company Fourkind, and Microsoft recently teamed up to produce the world’s first AI-created whisky. The combination of old fashioned cask-aged flavor and cutting-edge AI produces unique flavors that, potentially, could be a hit with enthusiasts. According to Microsoft: Currently, the distillery’s machine learning models, powered by Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform and Azure…

DJI’s new Osmo Action camera takes the fight to GoPro

When it comes to consumer gear for filming sports and action, two products immediately come to mind: GoPro’s action cameras and DJI’s drones. GoPro tried to cross over into drones without much success, and now it’s DJI’s turn to try its hand at a small action camera with the new Osmo Action. The Osmo Action is being billed as a direct competitor to GoPro’s Hero 7 Black, going head-to-head on features and price ($349). It’s already up for sale. But DJI has some new tricks up its sleeve too. Of particular note is the second front-facing screen, making it much easier…

Nintendo reveals surprise new Pokemon mobile game

With no great fanfare, a new mobile game called Pokemon Rumble Rush was announced this week. Rumble Rush is the latest in the Rumble series (called Pokemon Scramble in Japan), a lesser spin-off of the main Pokemon games that’s basically a beat-em-up involving chibi versions of your favorite pocket monsters. The first game came out for WiiWare, with sequels on the 3DS and Wii U. As is typical with the Rush series, your character travels to different islands, unlocking various creatures, and beating the crap out of every Pokemon you see by repeatedly tapping on the screen. According to its Play Store description, your in-game currency is called “ore,” which can be refined into different kinds…

The Starfinder Beginner Box is an inclusive introduction to tabletop RPGs

May15

I promised myself I wouldn’t call Starfinder “Dungeons and Dragons in space.” It feels lazy. Also, Spelljammer. What I will call it: the most inclusive major RPG I’ve played. And that makes it the perfect introduction to the magical world of tabletop role playing games. Yes, Starfinder is a tabletop RPG: you play it with books, dice, and friends. Most commonly it’s played by groups in person, however it can also be played using chat rooms, video conferencing apps, or dedicated tabletop gaming software. As Paizo, the company behind the game, puts it: Starfinder is a tabletop adventure roleplaying game (RPG):…

Google’s new free app teaches kids to read by listening to them

Google has just ripped the beta label off Rivet, its free mobile app designed to help young children learn to read. Designed by the company’s Area 120 incubator for employees’ big ideas, Rivet comes with more than 2,000 books for children, categorized by topic and reading level. It also listens to kids read, and assists with pronunciation when necessary. When Rivet’s Android app hears your child read aloud, it encourages them with subtle visual cues; if they mispronounce a word, a button pops up, prompting them to hear the word pronounced correctly and to try again. When they’re ready, they…
