Internet And Technology Leaders Address Web 2.0 Summit 2011
Foursquare today revealed more details about the service split of its existing app and its new Swarm app. The company also revealed Swarm for Android and iOS is coming “next week” (which narrows down the timeframe slightly from the previous “coming weeks”). The biggest change is that the mayorship feature that gamified Foursquare is being cut down to a minimum and transferred over to Swarm. Starting today, there will be no more ousting of mayors in the Foursquare app and current mayors will be frozen in place “for the time being.” The list of proud mayorships you hold will continue…

Twitter’s crash-reporting platform for Android and iOS is now available to OS X developers. In a blog post, Crashlytics co-founder Wayne Chang notes that  like the mobile service, the desktop version will “seamlessly manage all your apps under one roof.” The service creates detailed reports of mobile — and now desktop — app crashes via an online and desktop dashboard. Acquired by Twitter in January 2013, Crashlytics is used by Twitter, Yelp, Vine, buffer, Path, Square and Yammer amongst others. Image Credit: Scott Olson/Getty Images

Microsoft this week quietly launched Bing Search for Firefox OS, which joins the roster of competing platforms that have an app for the search engine (including Android, iOS, and Kindle). “At Bing, we are committed to helping you spend less time searching and more time getting things done regardless of which platform you use,” Microsoft promised. You can download it now directly from the Firefox Marketplace. While there is a “Google Search” app on the Firefox Marketplace, it’s not made by Google (which only reminds us that every platform has a problem with unofficial and fake apps). Firefox OS is…

Doug Levy is a staff copywriter and editor for the Shutterstock blog. This post was originally published on the Shutterstock blog and has been adapted with permission. This Sunday, Mother’s Day will be celebrated in dozens of countries around the world, and while we take the opportunity to show our eternal appreciation to the women who brought us into the world, our thoughts also turn toward some of the more memorable maternal figures in pop culture at large. Everyone knows there’s almost nothing a mother won’t do to protect her child, but there are some movie moms out there who are pretty unstoppable…

Google Chrome will soon let Mac owners open files with Chrome apps

Google is testing a new feature in Chrome for Mac that will let Chrome apps register in OS X’s file associations to let you open files directly, as spotted by Engadget. The feature is currently available in Chrome Canary once you enable the following flag: chrome://flags/#enable-apps-file-associations. Google plans to add this type of file integration to Windows and Linux as well, but it has hit some snags. Windows, for instance, doesn’t detect specific Chrome apps, instead labeling them all as Google Chrome. ➤ OS integration of file associations for Chrome apps [Google+]
