Over 650,000 Game of Thrones fans sign petition to remake Season 8

Game of Thrones Season 8 has been… controversial. The final season for one of the most popular shows on the planet is its worst rated season on IMDb by a considerable margin. At the time of writing, episodes 3, 4, and 5, are the three worst rated episodes in the show’s history. Perhaps that’s just the combination of reactionary reviews and unreasonable expectations, but many fans feel the show has lost its grasp on its narrative and characters. I’ll keep this post free of spoilerific specifics, but suffice to say, I’m one of those disappointed fans. The solution? Remake Season…

Mad scientist builds a robot to beat the crap out of him in a VR fighting game

Since the 80s, fighting games have been a raucous good time, a way to blow off some steam while digitally beating an AI opponent to smithereens. It’s a thing we’ve all dreamed about since childhood — a robot that hits back during fighting games — but after seeing it, I’m not so sure I still want…

Bad news, journalists: Robots are writing really good headlines now

May17

Journalism is hard. Hours of research and writing culminate with publishing a piece with little more than blind faith that it’ll be well-received. Most aren’t. And for those that flop, it’s typically the headline we start with when trying to diagnose the cause of our failures. Until recently, journalists scoffed at the idea of an AI capable of doing their work. AI could gather facts, write simple reports, and publish with a dizzying frequency human writers could never touch, but they weren’t as creative. They were, in fact, a complete failure at writing human-centric copy, the sort of prose that…

Microsoft announces cloud gaming partnership with Sony

May17

Microsoft and Sony, makers of the eternally-competing Xbox and PlayStation consoles, respectively, today announced they were partnering up to find “joint development of future cloud solutions in Microsoft Azure to support their respective game and content-streaming services.” Basically, the Hatfields and McCoys of the gaming world are burying at least part of the hatchet. Microsoft revealed the partnership earlier today. The press release opens with this line, which makes it sound like a peace treaty: “Under the memorandum of understanding signed by the parties…” And you agree not to run ads sniping at each other, a la SEGA and Nintendo…
