Quotable

"Tony Hayward spent the day before Father's Day yachting with his son around the Isle of Wight, England. He got his life back, and left Carl-Henric's 'Small People' to spend their Father's Day drowning in BP's crude mess. That's proof that it takes a lot of nerve - and no conscience - to run a big oil company." ~ Yasha Harari

Amazon granted patent for Bitcoin-style system to fight DDoS attacks

Cryptocurrency rumor mongers are likely to be dancing today as Amazon has successfully filed a patent for a Bitcoin-styled Proof-of-Work system. But don’t get ahead of yourself, it doesn’t look like the Seattle-based ecommerce giant will be accepting Bitcoin for payments. Despite first being filed in December 2016, Amazon’s patent application was granted earlier this week and appears to outline a system that uses Proof-of-Work to prevent distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. “One way to mitigate against such attacks is to configure a service such that requests to the service incur some sort of expense, thereby providing a disincentive to participating…

Review: The $99 Urbanista Stockholm wireless earbuds get the fundamentals right

Oh Sweden. It’s the birthplace of A-Ha’s Morten Harket. Home of the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund. And yes, its capital city, Oslo, is a sight to behold. The fjord-pocked Scandinavian nation is also home to Urbanista – a trendy boutique audio firm which recently released the Stockholm wireless earbuds. Why a Swedish company would want to name a flagship product after the capital of Norway is beyond me, but it’s their prerogative, I guess. Forgive me, dear reader, for I know that was a horrendous joke. I deserve all the angry hate mail I’ll inevitably get. But can you…

Dark web user gets 42 months in prison for buying child abuse imagery with Bitcoin

A man in the US has been sentenced to 42 months in federal prison for purchasing, downloading, and concealing child abuse imagery he got on the dark web and paid for with Bitcoin. According to court documents, starting in May 2017, Stephen P. Langlois, Jr. used Bitcoin to subscribe to an overseas child pornography website from which he downloaded over 100 child pornography videos. Langlois, who aside from the prison sentence will be subject to a subsequent supervision of 10 years after he’s released, pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography in US District Court in Providence on January 2,…

Last week, we celebrated the 14th edition of TNW Conference. 17,500 people visited from across the globe to discuss the future of tech. Without a doubt, it was the greatest edition we’ve organized. We had a stronger lineup than ever before, including speakers like Guy Kawasaki, Apple’s original marketer, and Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia. Our venue was new, too – we moved to NDSM in Amsterdam North, so we could offer more stages and, more importantly, more food trucks. The location’s artistic vibe was the perfect backdrop for our tech festival. Take a look at some of the TNW2019…

Asus’ new Zenfone 6 has a flip-up camera and a 5,000mAh battery

May17

Posted In: Around the Web, Plugged

We’ve seen some whacky implementations from phone makers to overcome the notch: pop-up camera, pizza shaped-camera, and even a rotating camera. Now, Asus has added another method to the list by placing a flip-up camera into their latest flagship, the Zenfone 6. The flip-up hardware acts as both the front and rear cameras. When you want to take a selfie, the motorized camera flips up as shown in the picture below. Besides the dual-camera that flips up, the device’s main highlights are a 6.4-inch edge-to-edge display and a massive 5,000 mAh battery. The phone’s overall spec sheet puts it in the…
