"Mother's Day is a very complex holiday. It starts with a simple premise: Let your Mother know you love her. After that, she'll argue with you all day, telling you how you don't love her, just so that you have to apologize and show her how much you love her, despite being yelled at all day." ~ Yasha Harari

Get ready for the great Huawei-Android war of independence

Last night, Reuters broke the news that Google, in response to a government order, was cutting ties with Chinese technology conglomerate Huawei. While the order is live, future devices from the company won’t have access to Google’s proprietary software – like Maps, the Google Play Store, and more. This news is, frankly, devastating for Huawei. The company is the world’s second largest phone manufacturer. This is a feat the company has managed to accomplish while simultaneously avoiding the US market. Huawei has achieved massive success in Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Through Honor, Huawei’s primarily youth-oriented sub-brand, the company…

Freshness sensors for milk could dramatically reduce waste

Researchers have developed a new technique that can pinpoint, in real-time, the moment at which milk spoils inside a carton. In their new study, published in the journal Food Control, they suggest that if their invention is integrated into the caps of milk containers, it could one day replace less-accurate sell-by-dates – and save a huge quantity of milk from being wasted every year. Milk goes off because of microbial growth that occurs over time, emitting increasing amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) – such as aldehydes and ketones – that change the liquid’s flavor and smell.  The researchers’ invention is…

Another weekend, another batch of stories you might’ve missed. Or as we like to put it: welcome back to another edition of Moonday Mornings, Hard Fork’s wrap-up of the weekend’s top cryptocurrency and blockchain stories. So, without further ado, let’s get into it: 1. Facebook has set up its secretive cryptocurrency and blockchain project, Libra, in Switzerland, Reuters reports. According to Geneva’s commercial register, the social media giant filed the registration papers on May 2, with plans to provide financial and technology services – and also develop hardware and software. 2. Remember the time a shady blockchain startup listed Hollywood A-lister…

After Google, Qualcomm and Intel reportedly stops dealing with Huawei

May20

After Google announced that it’s ceasing some business with Huawei, Bloomberg reported today that chipmakers like Intel, Qualcomm, and Broadcom are stopping component supplies to the Chinese tech giant until further notice. This is a huge blow to the company’s future as a device maker. Google’s ban means that Huawei can’t use certain parts of Android, including Google Play services, Google Maps, and Gmail. But, it can still use open part of Android – aka Android Open Source Project (AOSP) – and make its phones work. However, with chipmakers banning trade with Huawei mean that it won’t get critical components like modems and…

Dutch bank ABN AMRO ditches its Bitcoin wallet because it’s ‘too risky’

Dutch bank ABN AMRO has decided to cancel its plans for a custodial cryptocurrency wallet, called Wallie, claiming that digital assets are “just too risky.” Back in January, the rumor mill spun into action after images surfaced on Twitter that appeared to suggest Dutch bank ABN AMRO was designing a cryptocurrency wallet. But now the bank’s senior press officer, Jarco de Swart, confirmed to Hard Fork in an email that the bank has “decided not to follow up on the Wallie enquiry [sic].” “We have approached all the people who have shown interest,” he continued. “We have concluded that cryptocurrencies…
