Sunrise

Much-praised iOS calendar app Sunrise has today opened up to a wider audience with the launch of an Android app and a version for desktop Web browsers. The appeal of Sunrise over rival calendars is its clean, simple design and useful hooks into third-party services like Facebook, LinkedIn and Foursquare. Android users get the added benefit of a swish-looking homescreen widget. Although tablet support is missing right now, it’s planned for a future update. On the desktop, you have a choice between accessing Sunrise via a website or a dedicated Chrome app that has the benefit of working completely offline. The Chrome…

solo-2-feature-3-O
Less than 24 hours since its high-profile acquisition by Apple was confirmed, Beats is back with a new pair of luxury over-ear headphones. They’re called the Solo2 and as the name implies, act as a spiritual successor to the current Solo HD. The latter is one of Beats’ more iconic headphone designs, so it’s not surprising to see a refresh for 2014. The new headphones are a little bulkier than before, with what appears to be a thicker headband and earcups. The biggest change though, Beats claims, is the “updated and improved acoustics,” which should offer a broader and clearer audio…

dots dots
Dots, the Betaworks-owned company that developed the addictive game of the same name, is back with its follow-up: Two Dots. Like the original title, which racked up 20 million downloads, the object of Two Dots is to find as many vertical and horizontal lines of same colored dots on the grid. As is the way in its  predecessor, finding squares is generally the best way to go about things. The first Dot game comes with two challenges: go against the clock to get as many points as you can, or a more tactical game that limits users to just 30 moves. Two Dots is…

email
Acompli, the iOS mobile email and calendar app that we like a lot, has gone up in our estimations after adding support for iCloud, Hotmail, Microsoft Live and Outlook.com. Acompli uses Mailbox-style swipe actions to process email, and now an update to the app lets users sync their iCloud email, contacts and calendars, and email accounts for Microsoft trio Hotmail, Live and Outlook.com. The app initially launched with support for Microsoft Exchange, Google Apps and Gmail accounts, so this expansion will help users plug numerous services into a single app. The Acompli team isn’t revealing how many downloads it has had, but CEO Javier Soltero says its “strong traction…

Police
TapShield, an app for iOS and Android devices which allows users see crowdsourced crime stats and quickly contact emergency services in the US, is now available to the public following its initial launch on select university campuses. The app allows users to view real-time crime stats and report incidents to authorities along with their exact GPS co-ordinates and profile information at the touch of a button. And why not just call the emergency services? Well, TapShield says users receive help from”emergency responders” (campus police and security, primarily) up to 47 percent faster than calling 911 or using an emergency blue-light phone….
