CloudFlare: Hong Kong democracy movement hit by ‘one of largest DDoS attacks in internet history’

Occupy Central, a grassroots movement that aims to bring universal suffrage to Hong Kong, has been subject to “one of the largest and most persistent DDoS attacks in the history of the Internet,” according to CloudFlare, the web performance company maintaining its website. Under the current political system, the Chinese government proposes two candidates to lead Hong Kong, with the winner picked by the city-state’s elected chamber. Occupy Central is proposing a one-man one-vote system, and is running an unofficial referendum of Hong Kong citizens online. Its website suffered stability issues this week following a strong DDoS attack. CloudFlare CEO Matthew Prince claims that even more sophisticated attacks are battering it today…

There have been plenty of rumors swirling around Apple’s smartwatch, commonly dubbed the iWatch, and now the Wall Street Journal reports that it will have a few designs with multiple screen sizes, and could launch as early as October this year. In particular, the smartwatch is said to feature more than 10 sensors, some of which are specific to health and fitness tracking. Earlier this month, Apple announced HealthKit for iOS 8, which lets third-party apps store data for quick access and easy reading in one central place using the Health app. A sensor-equipped wearable device makes sense for its renewed push into the health…

This ambitious company is one step closer to becoming the Pixar of China after raising $20m

Light Chaser
Gary Wang, the founder of top Chinese video website Tudou which was merged with rival Youku in a $1 billion deal, started an animation studio last year that was billed as a contender for the Chinese equivalent of Disney’s Pixar. Today, Light Chaser announced that it has closed a $20 million Series B round of funding led by GGV Capital and Chengwei Capital. The company aims to produce “world-class animated films with a Chinese cultural touch” — but we can only gauge how successful it will be in July 2015, which is when its first 3D animation is scheduled to be completed….
