Google has added its YouTube Mix feature for auto-generated playlists to its iOS app. To be clear, the feature isn’t brand new to the app, but the quiet rollout – as noticed by my colleague Nick Summers – means that it has remained relatively unannounced since launch. YouTube Mix first launched on the desktop in April 2013. Earlier this year, it also appeared in the Android app. The feature compiles an initial 50 videos for content you’re viewing, and can call up another 50 if you need more to watch.       As the amount of videos on YouTube has…

With more and more people using Twitter’s DM (Direct Messages) feature as a chat service, the company is working to upgrade the experience. Today Twitter sent a tweet that should give users of its iOS and Android apps something to DM about: We’re also making an update to the Twitter iPhone and Android apps that will allow you to access your entire DM history. — Twitter Support (@Support) July 18, 2014 Access to your entire history is a great way to keep track of what you’ve said to friends and family without having to launch the social network’s site on…

Will light field photography replace DSLRs? Lytro’s CEO Jason Rosenthal says yes — eventually

LYTRO-ILLUM_Right-Orthos
On July 31, photographers will finally be able to wrap their hands around the Lytro Illum, the world’s first pro-level light field camera. Unlike the DSLRs that everyone is now used to, the Illum lets you create what Lytro calls “living pictures,” derived from the camera’s sensor and lens, specialized software and 3D graphics. Together, these create a novel, immersive visual experience. The most compelling aspect of living pictures is their interactivity. Because the camera shoots images with information on the direction, color and intensity of the light rays, viewers can later shift the focus, tilt, perspective, and depth of field to different subjects in a frame on…

This post originally appeared on the Crew blog. You’ve heard people say you need to get out of your comfort zone, right? You need to stretch yourself, they say. It’ll be good for you. Everyone seems to agree with this idea, but what do we actually know about the comfort zone? Aside from the fact that this seems to be true: Okay, but what is the comfort zone really and why should we leave it? Let’s do a little digging to find out. What is the comfort zone? The most scientific explanation of what a comfort zone is relates it to anxiety…

Google shares sneak peek of Material Design applied to Chrome OS

Jul18

Today, Google’s François Beaufort dropped a screenshot of a new Material Design-inspired first draft of Chrome OS on Google+. Like Android L, the Chromium OS screenshot is all about the flat design aesthetic. First noticed by 9to5Google, the screengrab is a collection of browser windows showing off window management. While these are noted to be “experiments” by Beaufort, its an interesting look into what could be the next version of Chrome OS. Codenamed, Athena, you can download the source code and try it out yourself via the Chromium OS pre-release builds. ➤ François Beaufort
