The WHO makes ‘gaming disorder’ official despite industry pushback

The World Health Organization (WHO) over the weekend finalized the eleventh revision of its International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11), which now includes “gaming disorder” and “hazardous gaming” as part of its list of behavioral disorders. Naturally, the gaming industry itself have been pushing back hard against the classification, but there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that it exists. This decision has been in the works for a while. The first draft of the WHO’s new ICD was published in January 2018. This weekend’s decision was more of a final confirmation that the various organizations within the gaming…

Review: Blood and Truth is one of VR’s best action games

May28

Blood and Truth is a decidedly British PSVR game that plays out like a Guy Ritchie flick. It’s a grime-filled love letter to the kind of action pieces Vinnie Jones and Jason Statham flourish in – only you get to be the star of this one instead. It’s a PSVR-exclusive on-rails shooter developed by SIE London. VR gaming is full of these kinds of games – you teleport from cover to cover and shoot at legions of enemies – but none of them are quite like Blood and Truth. For starters, this one actually works. When played with two PS…

Microsoft brings back the legendary IntelliMouse Explorer, now with a proper gaming sensor

When Microsoft brought back the IntelliMouse Explorer – one of the most iconic mice ever made – I lamented the fact the company gave seemingly no consideration to the peripheral’s gaming performance. Gamers were the ones who most fondly remembered the mouse for its shape and performance, to the extent some still use the classic mouse today. Most other people probably wouldn’t even remember what the mouse was called. It seems Microsoft heard my complaints; the company today introduced the $60 Pro Intellimouse, which keeps its predecessor’s classic shape but adds gamer-friendly features like a new sensor, improved key actuation, customizable…

Huawei denies its Android replacement will launch next month

May28

It’s been a rollercoaster afternoon for Huawei news, even by the manic standards of this month. First, TechRadar managed to get a senior Huawei executive to confirm, on the record, that the company’s rumored Android replacement would be released next month. Then, almost immediately after, the company issued a swift denial. So, what happened? Let’s start at the beginning, when TechRadar Middle East managed to clinch an interview with Alaa Elshimy, Managing Director and Vice President of Huawei Enterprise Business Group Middle East. That’s a big job title, but the nuggets of information he dropped were even bigger. Elshimy said…

IOTA wants to ditch its most centralized component, but the timeline is still murky

IOTA, a distributed ledger protocol for the Internet of Things, has released a new white paper detailing an upcoming software upgrade that promises to improve scalability and get rid of the network’s most centralized component – the Coordinator. The plan, more commonly known as the Coordicide, will ensure the network remains stable and secure without the need for a central entity. While the IOTA research team is confident it has found a workaround, the timeline for implementing the solution remains unclear. “The IOTA Foundation is already working on implementation, but the timeline will depend on a number of variables,” an…
