Google has acquired the team behind Jetpac, an iPhone app for crowdsourcing city guides from public Instagram photos. The app will be pulled from the App Store in coming days, and support for the service will be discontinued on September 15. Jetpac’s deep learning software used a nifty trick of scanning our photos to evaluate businesses and venues around town. As MIT Technology Review notes, the app could tell whether visitors were tourists, whether a bar is dog-friendly and how fancy a place was. It even employed humans to find hipster spots by training the system to count the number of mustaches and…

Text on images — that’s the idea behind messaging, poster art, greeting cards and scenic displays. And font freaks (you know who you are) will always be on the lookout for ways to mix text into snapshots and vacation photos. Happily, dressing up your photos with text can be done right on your mobile phone with a variety of font photo apps. Tesla today announced that it has extended the same warranty for its Model S batteries to include the vehicle’s drivetrain units. The drive unit is covered under the same provisions as the existing battery warranty, so owners with an 85 kWh battery will benefit from eight years of coverage with no mileage restrictions, while 60 kWh owners have up to 125,000 miles. Tesla CEO Elon Musk noted that the new policy applies retroactively to existing Model S owners. Musk also confirmed on Twitter that the upcoming Model X and Model 3 designs will also have the same warranty. In a…

Google Ventures partner Kevin Rose said earlier this year at TNW Europe that he wanted to have another go at building a startup, and now, just a few months later, he’s ready to be an entrepreneur again. TechCrunch reports that Rose is scaling back from his Google Ventures role in order to launch North, a mobile development studio that will rely on lean teams of three to test the market with new apps. The concept is fairly similar to his original idea for Milk, which launched the Oink app and then quickly sold to Google. According to the report, North…

Aaron Hall is the Associate Director of Naming at Siegel+Gale. While naming your new tech product or company can be a lot of fun, it certainly isn’t easy. When approaching naming for the first or tenth time, there are some common pitfalls and traps in which companies tend to get caught. While it isn’t practical (or possible) to address every naming pitfall in a single article, there are a few easy ones to avoid when you jump into your next tech-naming project. 1. Exact dot-coms are hard to get. Get over it. Everyone seems to want the elusive exact dot-com…
