Apple begins storing user data on Chinese servers for the first time

China flag

Apple is now using servers on Chinese soil to house data belonging to users of China Telecom, ending its policy of storing the information in the US. The company confirmed the change to the Wall Street Journal, explaining that it comes after 15 months of testing. It isn’t clear exactly why Apple is moving to local servers, but it is likely to mean better quality of service for China Telecom customer who store music, photos and documents on its iCloud service. China has been cracking down on a range of US tech firms of late. There are ongoing antitrust investigations with Microsoft and Qualcomm, while it previously…

A couple of quirky bugs…

Aug15

Found a couple of funny bugs today that I thought I’d share.

First, this one:

Italics

Weird: Partially italicizing right-aligned text screws with the display of trailing spaces. But it doesn’t do the same to left-aligned text with leading spaces:

Italics2

And then there’s this one, where you start with a file that you’ve suppressed gridlines on:

Nada

…and then you add a New Window…which allows you to look at a different parts of the same file on dual monitors – or even the same monitor if it’s suitably wide, by clicking on this:

New Window2

(Aside: I never rated this feature as being particularly useful until I got a second monitor and then recently rediscovered it. Now I’m starting to think is indispensable, as I no longer have to scroll around half as much as I do when getting to grips with how spreadsheets are laid out, or when putting in new formulas that point from one region of a workbook to a completely different region of the same workbook. I’m sure Dick has been using it for years to avoid rodenting.)

But when you compare the new window (which Excel temporarily renamed SomeFileName:2) to the old (which Excel temporarily renamed SomeFileName:1), there’s a couple of subtle differences:
&nbps;
SideBySide

So it respects my wishes to not show the Formula bar, but ignores my wish to not display gridlines and headings. And if I close the original window – the one called SomeFileName:1 – then those settings I didn’t want from SomeFileName:2 are now in the file SomeFileName. Bummer.

So make sure that’s the one you close when you’re done. Otherwise your file now has gridlines and/or headings when you didn’t want it to.

Cards with Xbox One and Xbox 360 digital download codes to be sold across the US and UK

E3 Gaming And Technology Conference Begins In L.A.

Physical cards with digital download codes for Xbox 360 and Xbox One games will soon be offered in stores across the US and UK. Instead of buying a new release with a disc and traditional case, you’ll essentially have a tiny piece of card with a unique number on the back. Players can then take it home, type in the code – or just hold it up to the Xbox One’s optional Kinect sensor – and begin downloading the game to their hard drive. The whole process, admittedly, sounds a tad illogical; why visit a retailer when you can buy…

one-diary

Calendar APIs come in all shapes and sizes, each with different authentication flows and different data models. Making sure that your application supports all of them can be a long and difficult process. This is where the One Calendar API hopes to make a difference. One Calendar is an API that wraps around commonly used calendars, such as Google Calendar and Microsoft Exchange, and was developed by the team behind the One Diary app. Adam Bird, CEO of One Diary, tells us: “I was frustrated with how I couldn’t use calendars to run my life because it was nigh on…

Easy Taxi drivers and passengers can now share their routes via Waze

Drivers stand beside modified taxis and

As the battle between taxi-booking apps heats up, Easy Taxi has joined hands with Google-owned Waze to increase its focus on road safety. Waze is known for providing real-time information on traffic updates and road conditions, and the partnership will let Easy Taxi drivers tap on its map, alerting them to accidents and road mishaps for better planning of routes. The caveat is that drivers need to have the Waze app installed on their smartphones. Once an Easy Taxi driver uses Waze to navigate a route, he can send it to the passenger with the introduction of a special functionality. The…
