Twitter ‘accidentally’ blocked accounts of China dissidents ahead of Tiananmen anniversary

Twitter has apologized after it suspended hundreds of accounts that were critical of the Chinese government, merely days ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre on June 4. The microblogging service said it suspended “a number of accounts” as part of its efforts to curb various methods of platform manipulation, including “spam and other inauthentic behaviors.” “Sometimes our routine actions catch false positives or we make errors. We apologize,” the company’s Public Policy handle tweeted. Sometimes our routine actions catch false positives or we make errors. We apologize. We’re working today to ensure we overturn any errors…

‘Crypto-Twitter’ is explaining Bitcoin in 280 characters or less

Self-professed cypherpunk Jameson Lopp has set the cryptocurrency community a seemingly impossible task: efficiently explain Bitcoin in less than 280 characters. A global, neutral payment network that allows anyone on earth to transact a huge or tiny amount of value with anyone else within minutes, without needing to ask permission from a government, without disclosing one’s personal information, and without the possibility of censorship. — Alex Gladstein (@gladstein) June 2, 2019 While some responses, like the one above, were overtly genuine, others were more sarcastic. “Bitcoin is free Internet money that will make everyone rich, automatically solve ethics without any…

These designers want to hide a cryptocurrency mining farm in a skyscraper water park

The cryptocurrency and blockchain industry has thrown out its fair share of zany ideas over the last few years. But a group of designers is taking wild blockchain concepts to new heights with their plans for a cryptocurrency mining facility hidden in a skyscraper water park in Tehran, Iran. Yeah, I don’t know where to start either. But let’s try. The plans show a cryptocurrency mining farm, swimming pools, shopping mall, food court, and a spa all wrapped around each other, blurring the lines between form and true function. The idea is to create an off-grid, glass-encased water park that…

Jun03

Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! Been on the hunt for a pair of headphones? A set that’ll become your daily drivers for the next few years? Well, look no further. Why? Because Sony‘s WH-1000XM3 headphones are now selling on Amazon for only $298, down from their list price of $349.99 (which is how much they cost on Sony’s own site). These cans are probably the best in their price range on the market. Our Editor-in-Chief liked the previous models so much he refused to send them back to Sony. And…

Big banks are launching a blockchain trade platform powered by ‘Bitcoin-like’ token

The banking industry is hell-bent on taking over the nascent blockchain and cryptocurrency market. A group of financial firms led by UBS Group AG is eyeing blockchain technology for settling cross-border trades worldwide with its own “Bitcoin-like” token. The 14 firms – including Barclays, Nasdaq, Credit Suisse Group, Banco Santander, ING, and Lloyds Banking Group – have registered a new entity to control the devleopment of the token, dubbed ‘utility settlement coin’ (or USC for short), The Wall Street Journal reports. The financial giants have poured over $60 million into the new company, called Fnality International. The token, which has…
