WeCycle wants to crowdsource cyclists’ every movement to help make roads safer

CYCLING

WeCycle may sound an awful lot like ‘recycle’, but this iPhone app is more about recording cyclists’ every movement than converting waste into reusable material. TravelAI, the developers behind the app, won a contract from the UK Government to work closely with local authorities with a view towards optimizing travel experiences across each city. And it seems there was a “gaping hole” in the understanding of cycling behaviour. “How can they cater for cyclists, when they don’t even know where and when people cycle?,” the company ponders. This is where WeCycle wants to help. Similar to how you may have…

Facebook’s first ever live video Q&A in space: Watch it here

Facebook history is being made today as it hosts the first ever live Q&A from space, beginning at around 1:55pm BST/8.55am EDT, 5.55am PDT/2.55pm CEST. At that time (or thereabouts – Facebook warned there could be a slight delay depending on the satellite connection), Alexander Gerst will spend 20 minutes responding to questions on camera live from the International Space Station. After this, he’ll spend another 30 minutes answering more questions in text form on his Facebook page. So, if you’ve always had a burning question you wanted to ask an astronaut in space, today is your chance, if you’re…

ESPN has lanuched an app for Pebble smartwatches that allows ardent sports fans to keep up-to-date on results and game schedules without having to reach for their phone. Announced today, the app lets Pebble owners get NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and NCAA scores and fixtures directly on their wrists, which should help people to keep in touch with their team when life’s other priorities get in the way. It’ll also allow users to track multiple games at once and vibrate when the score changes in a tracked game. The post announcing the app was actually pulled shortly after first being published, but…

Pebble for Android now lets you read your WhatsApp messages on your wrist

If you own a Pebble smartwatch and have been syncing it with your Android smartphone, you may have become a little frustrated with the WhatsApp integration. Why? Well, because it would tell you that you have a new WhatsApp message, but not tell you what it says. While there have been some workarounds in the past via third-party apps, Pebble’s own native app now enables full messages, including, importantly, the content of the message. It seems this tighter integration was quitely rolled out with a software update in the past week. Certainly, it’s been a long time coming, and means…

US-IT-GOOGLE

If you’ve been vacillating about whether or not to pick up a Google Chromecast streaming dongle, some of the UK’s largest retailers just made that decision a little bit easier (or harder, if you were trying to resist the temptation) by significantly cutting the price. Although it’s been available in the US for more than a year already, the Chromecast only graced the UK’s shores in March this year and has since been priced solidly at £30. Now, however, retailers have slashed prices by 40 percent; Currys is currently offering it for £20 in-store, while Tesco, Amazon and Currys have it for sale priced…
