TPVision, a subsidiary of Philips, has announced that it will be the first television manufacturer to support streaming music via Spotify Connect to a Philips TV. Announced today ahead of the start of the IFA trade show in Berlin next week, the integration will allow users to ‘cast’ music from the smartphone or tablet apps – and even continue doing other things on the device while the music plays on – to Android-based Philips Smart TVs. We’re not sure exactly how many people sit down and listen to music via their TVs – a stereo is certainly a more traditional…

Back in December last year, we brought you news on fashion startup Mallzee, a recommendation app for iPhone that learns a user’s style and suggests clothes they might like to buy from the likes of Urban Outfitters, ASOS, Topman and French Connection. It adopts a familiar (to some) Tinder-esque swiping system too. Like something? Swipe to the right. Hate it? Swipe to the left. Since we last caught up with Mallzee, the Edinburgh-based company has launched a version for iPad users too, but today sees the lid lifted on version 2.0, which heralds a handful of fresh features and general…

Facebook dominates India’s mobile app space. More than 100 million people in the country use its service month, while WhatsApp — the messaging app it bought for $19 billion — has 60 million active users there, and it’s adding 3 million more in India alone per month. Yet, still there are worthy competitors. Global chat apps Line and WeChat have made some progress since localizing their services in India last year — but it is Hike, an India-made app, that is catching the eye after raising a $65 million round of funding. Hike has raised a total of $21 million from parent company Bharti…

A Chinese Alibaba employee walks through

Payments is a natural extension of e-commerce, and now Alibaba is pushing mobile shopping to users of its payments service Alipay by letting retailers create online storefronts within Alipay Wallet, the e-payment app relaunched last year to handle online-to-offline payments. Alipay has been recruiting merchants for its wallet app since June and now over 1,000 are on the platform. But now it is opening up access to its programming tools for merchants and software developers, including vendors on Alibaba’s Taobao marketplace and Tmall store. This is aimed at making it “easier and faster for independent merchants to develop Alipay Wallet virtual storefronts, thus opening…
