Microsoft’s iconic MSN Messenger is closing down in China, the last market where it remains

Farewell MSN Messenger. The iconic 15-year-old Microsoft instant messaging service for desktops will finally be laid to rest after its closure was announced in China, the last market where it remains active. Microsoft began migrating Messenger users to Skype in January 2013, before the service was retired in March that year. It was left open in China, mainly because it is operated by local partner TOM and not the US company itself, but the ax will fall on the Chinese service when it closes on October 31, as Technode reports. Users in China are also being encouraged to switch over to Skype with the…

Nintendo is maintaining its tradition of slowly developing handheld gaming consoles with lighter, sleeker and more powerful redesigns. Today, the Japanese company announced two new 3DS models, simply called the “new” 3DS and “new” 3DS LL. Each unit is a little larger and lighter than its predecessor, and features a small nub called the “C-stick” that sits on the right-hand side, above the A/B/X/Y buttons. It’s not a traditional analog stick, or even another Circle Pad for that matter, but should prove useful for games that let you control the camera. The improved 3DS consoles will be fitted with new ZR and…

YouTube has given its site a minor facelift

YouTube has received an ever so minor redesign. When I kicked back with a few videos this morning (is there a better way to start the day?) I noticed the information pane underneath the video had been tweaked slightly. If memory serves, the Add To, Share and More buttons weren’t tucked quite so far towards the left-hand side of the page. YouTube is being a tad more economical with space, but on a large monitor it can also look a little stretched. Other elements also appear to have been cleared up, such as the related videos section on the right. Everything just…

Android 3

Samsung unveiled its new new smartwatch yesterday, the Tizen-powered Gear S that’s capable of making calls and going online without relying on a smartphone. Other features, as noted at the time, include turn-by-turn navigation provided by Nokia’s HERE mapping platform. Today, Nokia revealed further details of its plans for HERE, announcing it will be used on Tizen smartphones (and wearables), while a new licensing agreement with Samsung will see HERE launch on Android for the first time, albeit exclusively for its Galaxy-branded smartphones. It will be classed as a ‘beta’ product initially. This deal will also enable you to pair…
