meta-m1-1

The latest trend is for smartphone makers to expand into the watch market, but many of them lack the experience of designing for your wrist. Meta Watch, a spin-off of Fossil, approaches the smartwatch space as an experienced watchmaker with a technology background. Originally announced at the beginning of the year, Meta’s M1 watch begins shipping today with units expected to arrive next week. The new premium model is designed by Frank Nuovo and ranges in price from $249 to $449. The watch internals remain the same across price points, but the extra money goes toward different band styles and finishes….

Yahoo today announced its smart Android homescreen app Aviate has gained seven more languages. In addition to English, Aviate now supports French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Bahasa and Russian. While the app has been completely translated, Yahoo notes that if you’re using any of the above languages, you will still have to use the English version of Yahoo News Digest, since the app (Google Play) is English-only. It can be added as a widget in their Today Space, but the content won’t be converted. Yahoo also shared Aviate’s number of daily active users has “more than doubled” since launch, but…

Twitter adds more prominent tweet to and direct message buttons to Web profiles

If you’ve been poking around Twitter.com today, you probably noticed a couple new buttons on the site. Twitter announced today that it has updated the look of its Web profile pages to include sizable “Tweet to” and “Message”buttons. The buttons replace the “Tweet to” text box from an earlier profile design. Since they match your profile color, they can stick out a bit. I’m sure we’ll get used to the buttons eventually, but the change is jarring. Other updates to Twitter profiles today include a new Web font that should help speed and readability and new profile color choices. ➤ Twitter.com

Calico, the Google-founded research and development company with a healthcare focus on diseases of the aging, has announced a new collaboration with AbbVie, the biopharmaceutical research offshoot of Abbott Laboratories. This R&D collaboration is designed to assist the companies with creating, developing and eventually marketing new therapies for age-related diseases, such as neurodegeneration and cancer. Calico plans to build a new R&D facility in the San Francisco Bay Area to focus specifically on aging and the diseases associated with it, and both companies say they may invest up to $1.5 billion to accelerate the development of new drugs and therapies. Calico will…

At Boxworks 2014, Box CEO Aaron Levie announced that the company is building a suite of features to better serve its business customers. The new Box Workflow adds a workflow process on top of the Box platform using rules-based tasks and machine learning. Using open APIs, the Box Workflow employs automation and metadata features to create workflows. For the rules-based features, the metadata can be mined to create IFTTT-type triggers. For example: if your business needs to separate credit card charges from cash charges, it can create a rule that automatically finds those different types of charges and send the cash charges to…
