microsoft

Microsoft has fully overhauled its MSN portal to make it more deeply integrated with its other services. Alongside this, it will also be introducing a rebrand of its Bing mobile apps for Windows Phone, iOS and Android. Announced today, the beta portal brings a much cleaner design with the aim of making it more useful for users; it also brings with it deeper integration of Microsoft services, touch optimization and a responsive design that resizes according to screen/device size. News (and other content – videos, how-tos, features etc.) won’t be produced in-house anymore, instead, Microsoft has more than 1,000 partners on board to deliver content on a range…

twitter cards

This post originally appeared on the Buffer blog. Here’s a riddle: When is a tweet more than a tweet? We’re all pretty familiar with Twitter’s 140 characters—and of course, a photo is always an eye-catching addition. But what if your Twitter audience could sign up for your email list without ever leaving Twitter, or directly download your new app straight from a tweet? What if a photo and article summary could travel alongside every post of your content? And what if you could do all of this for free, right now? Twitter cards offer all this potential and more. In this post, we’ll…

100 entrepreneurs walk into a dark forest…

forest

Taking risk is an important part of being an entrepreneur. We all know and respect that. But there’s a difference between acceptable and calculated risk and just blindly putting everything on red. What works in one situation, for a particular team, in a particular industry, might not work for you. This seems to be lost on a lot of people, who take successful entrepreneurs and try to emulate them. I heard Daniel Ropers, the CEO of Bol.com explain this very well. He told an audience that it’s like sending 100 entrepreneurs into a pitch black forest with the objective of…

ruby

This post originally appeared on Code-love. In an online chat session between Yukihiro Matsumoto and Keiju Ishitsuka in early 1993, a discussion ensued about the name of a programming language that Matsumoto was going to write. He wanted to satisfy his desire to have an object-oriented scripting language, something that would craft virtual objects composed of data, and help them interact with one another. The alternatives at the time, Python and Perl, didn’t appeal to him; Python was too object-oriented and Perl having “the smell of a toy language.” Between “Coral” and “Ruby”, Matsumoto decided to go with the latter because it…

4ways

Shannon is Mention’s Content & PR Manager, where she crafts words, creates strategies, and recruits loyal advocates. This post originally appeared on the Mention blog. Knowing what your customers think about you and your brand is clearly invaluable information, but you’d be surprised by how many companies build for themselves rather than for their customers’ needs. Yes, we all like to work on projects we’re passionate about, but a business needs to be profitable (eventually), or at least break even for now. Here’s how listening to what current and potential customers are saying will help you build and grow revenue for your…
