Yesterday, at its WWDC developer conference, Apple unveiled the latest version of the MacOS operating system. Codenamed Catalina, it’s a fairly significant update for the platform, not least because of the changes that have taken place under the hood. Take, for example, the default shell, which has been migrated from Bash to Zsh. Oh shit! https://t.co/FweoKhQTNr pic.twitter.com/s74KeTKBPz — Christina “I Am Sadly not at WWDC” Warren (@film_girl) June 4, 2019 Bash has been the primary macOS shell since OS X 10.2 Jaguar. For almost sixteen years, MacOS developers have used it to write scripts and issue commands to the underlying…

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is stepping up its probe into defunct Canadian cryptocurrency exchange QuadrigaCX. In an announcement yesterday, the FBI asked victims affected by the QuadrigaCX collapse to come forward and complete a questionnaire to aid with its “ongoing investigation.” “If you have questions or concerns about your QuadrigaCX account, or if you believe you are a victim, please complete the below questionnaire,” the announcement reads. “Based on the responses provided, you may be contacted by the FBI and asked to provide additional information.” The questionnaire asks potential victims what their QuadrigaCX username was, and whether they…

With the infamous cryptocurrency mining script Coinhive now offline, you’d be forgiven for thinking crypto-jacking was a thing of the past. Sadly though, security researchers have uncovered a new malware family that’s attacking hardware to get it to secretly mine cryptocurrency. Researchers from Trend Micro have identified a malware which uses numerous web server exploits and brute-force attacks. The malware downloads and installs XMRig, a Monero cryptocurrency miner, according to the researchers’ findings, in an article spotted by ZDNet. BlackSquid was most active in the last week of May, with most of its attacks hitting Thailand and the US, according…

As someone who mostly relies on public transport to get around Bangalore, aka India’s IT capital, I’m happy to report that Google has just rolled out a bunch of commuter-friendly updates to Maps for users in the country, that will make it easy to optimize my daily trips to and from work. First off, Google Maps can now tell you more accurate bus travel times based on live traffic data. The feature is going live in 10 cities across India — Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Lucknow, Chennai, Mysore, Coimbatore, and Surat. This is especially handy for me in Bangalore,…
