Indian court rules that Asus can’t use its ‘Zenfone’ brand over trademark complaint

Yesterday, Delhi high court banned phone maker Asus from using the name ‘Zenfone,’ ‘Zen,’ or any similar trademark for its products. The court said that the trademark belongs to Telecare, which filed the suit for infringement and passing off.  Telecare owns the trademarks ‘ZEN’ and ‘ZEN MOBILE’ since 1999, and uses it to produce phones, tables, and accessories under that brand name since 2008. Asus has been selling phones in India under the Zenfone series name since 2014. The court said in a statement that Asus has used the trademark for identical goods (mobile phones) used by Telecare: “..the triple identity test…

It sure looks like Apple is gearing up for more cryptocurrency apps

At this year’s Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) the company is set to announce the release of “CryptoKit;” a cryptography-oriented tool kit for Apple developers. While the iPhone-maker avoids mentioning the magical words ‘blockchain’ and ‘cryptocurrency,’ it sure sounds like the new tool might have something to do with it. CryptoKit will be made available in the upcoming iOS13 update,  as spotted by The Block. The dev kit will officially be announced in a WWDC session called “Cryptography and Your Apps” later today. The cryptography tool set will let developers “compute and compare cryptographically secure digests, use public-key cryptography to…

YouTube is failing the LGBTQ community by allowing Steven Crowder’s homophobic slurs

Besides changing its logo to feature a rainbow of colors, YouTube is hardly celebrating Pride Month the right way this June, as it’s failed to address a key concern for LGBTQ users in its community. At the end of May, Vox host Carlos Maza tweeted a thread exposing several instances where right-wing YouTube commentator Steven Crowder clearly made homophobic and racist comments about him on his YouTube video series, Strikethrough. Since I started working at Vox, Steven Crowder has been making video after video “debunking” Strikethrough. Every single video has included repeated, overt attacks on my sexual orientation and ethnicity.…

New technology reveals some birds have specific ‘migration buddies’

Though much is known about where and when birds travel, a lot less is known about the composition of flocks and how long they stay together. Do birds come together in flocks by chance? Do they actively choose flock members? It’s difficult to understand groups without being able to observe them directly. But advances in technology are changing this. Individual birds can now be fitted with small tracking devices called geolocators which store data from one breeding season to the next. When the bird is recaptured, the data is then downloaded and used to reconstruct the bird’s migratory pathway. Geolocators…

Vancouver mayor suggests Bitcoin ATM ban to stop money laundering

Jun05

Vancouver has cryptocurrency growing pains. The city’s police labeled Bitcoin ATMs an “ideal money laundering vehicle,” and its mayor has even suggested a complete ban. Experts and local businesses have instead called for federal money services regulations to be changed to include Bitcoin ATMs, reports The Star. Vancouver’s city council already moved to regulate usage and operation of cryptocurrency ATMs with a bylaw in January. This enforces operators to hold business licenses, verify identities, and even warn users away from common types of fraud. Despite these efforts, police reiterated warnings that local fraudsters have been using cryptocurrency and cryptocurrency ATMs…
