Microsoft Makes $44.6 Billion Bid For Yahoo

Yahoo today announced it is closing three more products: Yahoo Education, Qwiki, and Directory. The company says the decision is part of a broader strategy to focus on its more successful projects. Yahoo Education will close down on September 30. The site is designed to connect users with education providers and content, but the company has concluded that education is an area outside of its core offerings “where users’ needs are already well served by alternative online resources.” For what it’s worth, we didn’t even know Yahoo Education existed. Qwiki will shut down on November 1. The app, which Yahoo…

Matt Kloskowski is a full-time Education Director for Kelby Media Group and a Tampa-based photographer. He’s the Editor of Lightroom Magazine and teaches Photoshop and Lightroom seminars around the world. This post was originally published on the Shutterstock blog and has been reprinted with permission. Many authors will tell you that as soon as your book goes to print, you think of 100 things you wished you’d done differently. I can honestly say that, three years later, I would have written the same book, Photoshop Compositing Secrets. Here’s why. About five years ago, I saw a commercial on TV (for Mountain Dew…

BitTorrent today announced it is adding a new paygate feature to BitTorrent Bundle, the company’s direct-to-fan publishing platform. Paygates will allow artists to monetize their Bundle content directly, though fans will only be able to download it a limited number of times before it is locked. In short, this is BitTorrent’s version of DRM. Once locked, the Bundle can’t be opened. “This ensures that the file’s value, and the original direct-to-fan transaction, is protected,” the company explains. Fans can purchase Bundles with a credit card or via PayPal in 140 currencies. The publisher covers the transaction fees, and BitTorrent says…

This post is brought to you by Comcast Business. Follow us @comcastbusiness.

I might be risking any credibility I have created in the technical community by saying this, but: Cloud computing might not be for you. Google’s Android operating system has been an enormous success in terms of user adoption, but the company’s own financial gains from the product haven’t always kept pace. Google has also dictated the placement and ordering of its apps and search bar on the homescreen and in a special Google folder. While some manufacturers choose to build Android…
