Nintendo shocks at E3 with surprise Zelda sequel announcement

Nintendo showed off a sneak peek this year of an upcoming game — and not just its usual in the glut of “latest installments” in the Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and Mario franchises. No, we’re getting a sequel — an actual sequel — to Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The reveal came at the end of Nintendo‘s E3 Direct show. The show wasn’t exactly dull before that point — we got more information on several upcoming titles, such as Pokemon Sword & Shield, Animal Crossing New Horizons, and Luigi’s Mansion 3. The Trials of Mana game is coming out in the West for the first time.…

Jack Dorsey told us about Square’s plan to help refugee entrepreneurs

Europe’s refugee crisis is often framed as merely that – a crisis. The Syrian civil war, to name just one of the many humanitarian catastrophes that occurred this decade, resulted in a flood of people escaping to safety in Europe. It’s easy to forget that these people once had lives and careers. They went to school and university. They have their own God-given abilities and aspirations. But tapping this human potential is proving challenging. Starting afresh is hard anyway. Factor in the inherent bureaucracies and frustrations of life as a refugee, and it’s almost impossible to create a new business.…

The most popular social media networks each year, gloriously animated

Considering social media’s global impact (hello Trump and Brexit), it’s strange to think just how young the medium is. Hell, before the early 2000s, if you wanted to reconnect with a long-lost friend, you’d have to go full detective to find their contact details. But nowadays? You just need to whack their name in Facebook (or, heaven forbid, LinkedIn) and they’ll pop right up. The dominance and influence of the current crop of social media platforms also tends to distort our memory. It’s hard to remember a time when Facebook wasn’t a behemoth – but it did exist and wasn’t…

If you’re starting your fitness journey, or just want to give someone a gift, Xiaomi’s fitness trackers have been very pocket-friendly options. Today, the company released the new version of its tracker called the Mi Band 4 costing just $25. The new band packs a lot of features, including a 0.95-inch color AMOLED display (120 x 240 resolution). That’s a solid upgrade from the Mi Band 3 which had a 0.78-inch display with lower resolution (80 x 120). The Mi Band 4 retains the waterproofing till 50 meters (5 ATM pressure) and adds the ability to record swimming laps. Plus, it…

People with disabilities are finding empowerment from Instagram communities

When I search for “bipolar mother” on Google Images, I find a lot of women with their heads in their hands, their crying children in the corner. These images actually understate the broader stigma of being a bipolar mother — the stories that I hear daily about interactions between mothers and their families are disheartening. As a bipolar pregnant woman, I was terrified that my first psychiatrist was right when he told me I should never allow myself to get pregnant; he said I might kill my baby. When empathy and understanding are not part of our daily life, we suffer. But social…
