Remember when it was revealed in January that Facebook used to pay teens and gather mobile app usage data from them through an app? Well, the company shut that program down after a huge backlash, but the app’s sorta making a comeback. Facebook today announced a new app called Study, that will collect your data in exchange for cash. The social network said it will use this data to “helps us learn which apps people value and how they’re used” and understand the community to improve its fleet of apps. It also likely hopes this is transparent enough to avoid…

Big tech’s AI runs on datasets labelled by impoverished people

Jun11

Posted In: Around the Web, artificial intelligence

Capitalism has a nasty habit of anchoring those beholden to it in an equilibrium where both the very poor and the very wealthy become similarly entrenched. A scientist making six figures in San Francisco pushes the boundaries of AI so a trillion dollar company can stay on top. And at the bottom of it all lies legions of impoverished workers doing 80-percent of the work. Some of the workers are working their way out of poverty. Sadly some are not. The primary difference being whether they have job security and receive a living wage. One of the world’s largest sources…
