Group organizing service Meetup today announced the general availability of its Chip In contribution button for all group and event pages in the US across desktop and mobile devices. The company also plans to offer the option to international groups soon. By making it easier for groups to crowdfund their expenses, Meetup is hoping to improve the overall quality of the events on its platform. The Chip In button allows organizers to remind members that good meetups cost money to put on without having to resort to a potentially off-putting direct request for funds. ➤ Meetup See also: Meetup simplifies…

There’s no shortage of niche video-streaming platforms, but the Shakespeare’s Globe has just announced a new super-niche service that lets you rent or buy recordings of performances from the famous London theater. Typical prices are £3.99 (roughly $6.50) for a rental, which lets you stream from your account for 7 days, or £7.99 (roughly $12.75) to purchase a download. You can search by category (e.g. Comedy, Tragedy, History), and many of the big-hitters seem to be on there, including Hamlet and Macbeth. More than 50 productions are available at launch, and there is some free stuff on there too, including…

Firefox OS, Mozilla’s open-source mobile operating system, is continuing its rollout to new territories with the news that Africa is next on the radar. Firefox OS adopts open standards, focusing on things like HTML5 apps and open Web APIs, and first entered the market via South America in 2013 with a couple of manufacturers. It’s been slowly arriving in new markets over the past year, and is now available in 25 markets across Europe, Latin America, Asia and Australia. It was only a matter of time before Africa was added to the mix. Mozilla has reeled in local networks Airtel,…

BFIPlayer_Feat
The British Film Institute (BFI) has redesigned its platform for independent films to make it easier for users to navigate, and to provide room to show off additional content. As well as making things a little slicker and simpler, the redesign allows the BFI to offer more titles than before: around 1,400 films are now available to stream through the platform. The BFI said around 60 percent of these are free, and the remaining 40 percent are charged from £1 for shorts and from £2.50 for feature length rentals. Users get one month to watch the rented title and can re-watch it for…
