Square is a company best known for its disruptive card payment technology. Founded in 2009 by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, the company sells affordable mobile-based point-of-sale systems. But beyond the world of traditional fiat currencies, the firm is making cautious steps into the fast-paced world of cryptocurrency. Back in March, Dorsey tweeted that Square was actively recruiting a modest team of cryptocurrency developers and designers to work on open-source contributions to the ecosystem. In the months that followed, Square’s kept quiet about its progress. #BitcoinTwitter and #CryptoTwitter! Square is hiring 3-4 crypto engineers and 1 designer to work full-time on…

At TNW Conference last month, tech leaders came together to discuss the future. Corinne Vigreux, co-founder of navigation tech giant TomTom, explained how her latest venture will equip the next generation with digital skills. Vigreux founded CODAM College, a tuition-free school where anyone can learn to code. On stage, she shared her thoughts on how peer-to-peer learning is the next big thing. After watching her TNW2019 talk, I was curious to find out more about Vigreux’s success in the tech world, how CODAM can make a difference, and how TomTom is helping pave the way for autonomous driving: As co-founder…

Cryptocurrency crime fighters are about to have a lot more fun after Europol has revealed its developing a game to help law enforcers learn how to trace and investigate illicit uses of digital currencies. ‘YouTube recommendations are toxic,’ says dev who worked on the algorithm

Jun14

Where else could you go for you daily dose of how-tos, like this one about draining washing machines, or 15-minute compilations of cats vomiting? This is what YouTube was made for, and it’s beautiful. At the same time, as YouTube has become the place for videos on the web, it’s led to a raft of new problems. Content moderation is a constant struggle and YouTube can do better, but there will likely always be some amount of offensive videos that people can seek out. However, the real issue is the videos we don’t seek out: YouTube’s recommendations. Recommendations are a waste…

Praise (insert preferred deity), Spotify finally has a podcast tab

Jun14

Posted In: Apps, Around the Web

When Spotify officially launched in India in February, I was excited for a particular reason apart from its music prowess. I wouldn’t need to use multiple podcast apps across platforms. However, I was utterly disappointed by the podcast experience on Spotify. The section was clumsily placed as a button in the library, and it was hard to discover new podcasts. Now, the company’s finally making a design change and giving podcasts its own tab. Thank fuck. Yesterday, Spotify announced it’s revamping its library layout for premium users. The redesign brings two new tabs: Music and Podcasts. Under the Music tab, you can find Playlists,…
