Nintendo makes over Dr. Mario for iOS and Android

Nintendo revealed last night that its next mobile game is finally hitting the stores next month, and it’s the comparatively low-key Dr. Mario World. The game appears to be Nintendo‘s attempt to cash in on the Match-3 puzzle genre — sort of like Candy Crush Saga, if that game made me a little less hungry for gummy bears. Unlike the series’ namesake game, which was more like Tetris, Dr. Mario World gives users a certain number of moves in which to eliminate all the onscreen viruses via color-coordinated pills. Gameplay is limited by a stamina meter, which runs out after you…

This is how rich you’d be if you bought Apple stock instead of its products

People don’t usually regret their first bit of exciting hardware. On the contrary, the majority of folks have strong nostalgic feelings about their earliest computer, game console, audio player, or phone. It’s not that they remind us of how far we’ve come technologically (although that’s true), they’re more reminiscent of our childhood in general, the carefree times before we became serious adults. For instance, I still have deeply fond feelings about my first Compaq Presario desktop computer, Sony Walkman, JVC dual cassette hi-fi stereo system, and yellow Ericsson flip phone. I’m sure everyone has items like this in their lives.…

Following months of speculation, Facebook finally confirmed the release of Libra next year. The tech giant also unveiled details about Calibra, its corresponding custodial digital wallet, but failed to provide specifics about its launch plans. Given the buildup to the announcement, it didn’t take long for Twitter to go into meltdown, with many commentators rushing to share their views with the world. Some good, other less so. Libra twitter pic.twitter.com/5M1fgZP2QU — Neeraj K. Agrawal (@NeerajKA) June 18, 2019 Peter Todd, a well-known industry figure and an applied cryptography consultant, didn’t mince his words. I think it’s safe to say Facebook‘s…

EU lawmakers need to look beyond the ‘top layer’ when regulating the internet

Jun18

Brussels policy makers could be forgiven for wanting to move quickly to regulate ‘the internet.’ Assailed by an avalanche of public opinion and a ‘techlash’ against many of the tech giants, politicians and legislators have quickly sought to target those that loom large. Unsurprisingly, this has meant a disproportionate focus on the well-known consumer facing technology platforms. Outwardly, this may seem like a sensible move. But problems occur when policy makers see these large tech platforms as ‘the internet,’ when in fact they are nothing more than the ‘top layer’ — the proverbial tip of the iceberg. Policy ideas and…
