How to download new apps to your Fitbit watch

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. Fitbit‘s smartwatches, the Ionic and Versa, come with a number of apps pre-installed. These apps — which include three music apps, a weather tracker, and a timer — might offer all you need, and you’d never think to try putting more on there. But if that’s the case you’re missing out, because both watches have a number of great apps. Sure, neither of them have a whole App Store at their disposal, but the number…

Genius inventor turns her Tesla Model 3 into a pickup truck

People have been clamoring for Tesla to make a pickup truck for years. Though Elon Musk has repeatedly promised it’s on the way, there’s yet to be any indication of what it’ll actually look like, let alone a firm release date. Simone Giertz, an inventor known for her wacky robots like the most effective/deadly alarm clock ever, took it upon herself to make the Tesla Truck a reality. The ‘Truckla’ is a collaboration between Giertz and a host of inventors, mechanics, and creators. Giertz actually purchases the car specifically for this video, which is rather gutsy considering it’s her first…

MIT built a neural network to understand pizza

A group of MIT researchers recently developed an AI model that takes a list of instructions and generates a finished product. The future implications for the fields of construction and domestic robotics are huge, but the team decided to start with something we all need right now: pizza. PizzaGAN, the newest neural network from the geniuses at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), is a generative adversarial network that creates images of pizza both before and after it’s been cooked. No, it doesn’t actually make a pizza that you can eat – at least, not yet. When we…

Roli’s Lumi is an advanced light-up keyboard that makes learning piano easy

Jun18

Anyone can learn to play the piano, but it takes dedication. People tend to give up not because it’s too difficult, but because they get bored practicing so much they don’t actually get to make any music. Roli wants to change that with the latest entry in its family of modular ‘Blocks‘ instruments, a light-up keyboard called the Lumi. It’s far from the first light-up keyboard around – I’ve already reviewed two of them on this very site – but it might just be the cleverest iteration of the concept yet. The Lumi came as a surprise when I sat…
