Quotable

"U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said publicly that the United States would not intervene in Syria, because the American Congress views second generation Syrian dictator Bashar Assad as a reformer. Is that because his live ammunition is reformed, or because his state sponsorship of terrorism and repressive abuse of human rights and free speech are so humanitarian?" ~ Yasha Harari

Following a raid on a Swedish data center late last year, The Pirate Bay was taken offline for just shy of two months before returning online fully today. The site appears to be fully working on its original domain, with the last uploaded torrent appearing on December 9, the day the site was taken down. The first new torrent contains an image of a phoenix and was uploaded today titled “like a phoenix, it rises from the ashes” said “The Pirate Bay is back.” Torrentfreak reported earlier this week that the previous moderators and admins may be locked out of the revived site,…

When exactly does a startup become a mature tech company?

Cartman
Paul Malicki is the global CMO of Easy Taxi and is based in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Early in my adventure in startups, I nurtured a young tech company. At the time, the company was run out of a garage. This same company would eventually become a million dollar revenue business with global operations. Yet, the rationale behind the existence of such an ‘abstract’ microeconomic model has never been questioned and the inflow of capital to the industry has continued ever since. Although more than 20 years has passed since companies like Apple or Netscape set the standards for startup expansion,…

Smashing down your open door policy at work

open door
David Hassell is the CEO of 15Five. This post originally appeared on the 15Five blog. In some companies, approaching the executive is like walking up to the Wizard of Oz, his gigantic floating head and flaming pillars striking fear into those who dare to disturb him. With an open door policy, the onus is on the employee, who will probably be intimidated and unlikely to accept the offer to step past the threshold. Besides, many modern organizations don’t even have walls, let alone doors to walk through. Open floor plans  are being used to make teams feel more cohesive, open, and transparent– with everyone from entry-levels…

Mike Fishbein does content marketing at Alpha UX. You can connect with him @mfishbein or via his personal site, mfishbein.com. An article ion The Next Web captured the essence of product management so well that it left one commenter exclaiming, “Finally I can point people to an article when they ask me what exactly I do!” I know how that reader feels. Product managers have evolved to the point where they are truly the lifeblood of modern organizations, but their roles are necessarily ‘open-ended’ and unfortunately often misunderstood.
