What is it about in-app purchases that makes people bristle? Perhaps, when an app is advertised as “free” people don’t generally expect to pay for major features. But in fact, this is a widespread practice in the industry that has now been rectified by at least one company. FiftyThree’s Paper, a popular sketching app, has always opened its free app to the bare minimum of its pen and eraser tools. For anything more, you had to plunk down at least $0.99 per tool or $3.99 for an Essentials pack. No longer.  Beginning today, the company has made all of Paper’s original tools…

Swatch has told TNW that its first smartwatch will be launched in the next two to three months. It should arrive just in time to go head-to-head with the Apple Watch, which is due to launch in April. A spokesperson says: “Swatch will launch a new generation of its Swatch smartwatch in the next two to three months. Functions will include communication, mobile payments at stores such as Migros and Coop, and applications that work with Windows and Android – without having to be charged. Separately, Swatch will present its new Swatch Touch at the end of the month.” It’s notable…

Global news organization Reuters just launched a new app — Reuters TV — to deliver personalized, on-demand and up-to-date video reports from around the world. Reuters TV is available for iPhone users in the US and UK, and offers two services: Reuters Now, which offers curated news that you can customize according to your interests and location. Live Feeds, which includes on-demand and uninterrupted real-time coverage of global events, like the protests in Egypt. The app is free for the first month. It’ll then cost you $1.99 (£1.49) per month via in-app subscription. ➤ Reuters TV [iOS]

Homerun has taken the pain out of hiring new staff at TNW

Homerun
Hiring new members of staff here at TNW used to be a painfully slow process. It involved setting up online forms, pulling together spreadsheets and generally being inefficient. We recently started testing a new service called Homerun, and I can safely say that I now actually enjoy the process of choosing new staff.
