Twitter pulled the covers off a new tool during the News:Rewired Conference in London last week. It’s called Curator. The new web app is designed to allow media organizations to pull together embeddable collections of tweets and vines, and TNW is one of the first to get its hands on it. You can see our test collection of Grammys tweets below. Grammys Curator allows you to see worldwide trends, select trends from specific geographical areas and see what sports and TV shows are currently being talked about. Once you’ve decided the topic you want to cover, you create a new project: Entering a search…

Transparency
Twitter today released its first biannual transparency report for 2015, enumerating government requests for user data. The company saw a 40 percent increase in data inquiries by governments over the second half of 2014. Globally, the company received 2,871 requests spanning 7,144 user accounts, and released some information for 52 percent of them. Twitter notifies its users of information requests except in cases of national security. The vast majority of these (56 percent) came from the United States. Twitter received 1,622 data requests from the US government covering 3,299 accounts over the report’s period, and provided some information for 80 percent of these. Russia went…

sms push email mail tweet

This post is first in a new series titled, ‘Future of Communications’, and is brought to you by Nexmo.

A main concern for many companies is evaluating the best communication technique to increase customer engagement. How do you convince customers to interact with your product in the most contextual manner? Email, push notifications and SMS are all popular methods of communicating with customers, but it can be tricky to discern when to use what while maintaining a good balance of delivering the right information at the right moment – all without sounding spammy. Mobile has become the most impactful communication platform due to its massive growth over the past five years, clocking in an impressive 85 percent penetration rate with…

Looks like someone’s read our Sling TV review! In addition to opening Sling TV for all interested users today, the company has also announced that it will add content from AMC Networks’ portfolio, including AMC, BBC America, BBC World News, IFC, SundanceTV and WE tv. AMC Networks will be included in Sling TV’s $20 monthly fee, not as an extra bonus pack. With ‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Better Call Saul’ and ‘Portlandia’ added to the mix, the company’s millennial target market is that much more incentivized. Sling TV says AMC Networks channels will come to the service “in the coming weeks.” Considering it has been about…

Skype too simple? Try this ASCII video chat client that only runs in terminal

Feb09

Sometimes, older is better. And this ASCII video chat client on GitHub might not replace Skype or Google Hangouts anytime soon (or anytime ever), but it’s certainly worth checking out if you’re an inquisitive dev familiar with terminal. You’ll need to be comfortable compiling your own software if you want to use the p2pvc repository from GitHub, though. So if you’re not, and you still want to try this, you’ll need some help. Once installed, both users will need to be running the software in terminal and you’ll need forward a couple of ports to allow the connections. You’ll also need both…
