Apple is highlighting games without in-app purchases in the App Store

Freemium games are bittersweet. Sure, you get to start playing for free, but if you want to do well at all or gain extra features, chances are you’ll have to spend money on upgrades or extras. That can be annoying, and it seems Apple thinks so too; MacStories spotted a new game category that highlights “Pay Once & Play” content. Basically, these are games that come without any extra purchases or DLC, just like the good old days. It’s a welcome move; while DLC can add longevity to a title, excessively incorporating it can also be deceptive to users who expect…

Apple purchased Burstly last summer, and got the TestFlight beta-testing tool with it. Now it’s starting to add new features to the tool. Starting today, developers can organize their testers into separate groups to easily A/B test changes among them. Developers can choose to quickly send separate builds, provide different instructions, or apply actions to several testers at once with the new update. Testflight announced it would be closing its old TestFllightApp.com website on February 26th; developers should set up their apps for iTunes Connect if they still want to use the service. ➤ Announcing TestFlight Groups

Apple’s two-factor authentication now works with iMessage and FaceTime

Apple’s two-factor authentication was a long-overdue upgrade for Apple ID security, but there were some areas that needed improvement. Today, the company has enabled two-factor verification for both iMessage and FaceTime. Previously, users that had two-factor enabled could log in to iMessage or FaceTime without requiring the time sensitive codes that should be required. Everyone should activate two-factor to ensure that their account is properly protected; it only takes a few minutes if you follow the instructions here. However, be sure to keep the recovery key safe or you might find yourself locked out of your account like I did. ➤ Apple enables two-step…

Apple doubles the maximum app size on the iOS App Store to 4GB

Feb12

Remember the days when software was measured in kilobytes? Yeah me neither. Keeping with the trend of ever-larger apps, Apple today announced it has doubled its maximum app size on App Store from 2 GB to 4 GB, its first ever size increase since the marketplace launched in 2008. You’ll need to download these apps over Wi-Fi, however; downloads on mobile networks are still limited to 100 MB. The increase should be particularly beneficial for games, which often have to load tons of pre-rendered content and high-resolution textures. ➤ Apple via MacRumors
