Quotable

"Scientists have discovered that 'Thinking outside the box might be facilitated by having a somewhat less intact box', which begs the question, why are people always thinking in or around boxes? Maybe it's time we think relative to other things ... like oceans, fields, galaxies, mountains and muppets." ~ Yasha Harari

Watch out: Calìbra.com isn’t the same as Facebook’s Calibra.com

Headlines have been saturated with news of Facebook’s new “cryptocurrency,” called Libra, over the past week. Well, some opportunistic scammers are taking advantage of the interest and trying to con people with a fake Libra token pre-sale. Over the weekend, a fake website surfaced that, on first look, is the same as Facebook’s legitimate Calibra.com website. On closer inspection though, it becomes fairly obvious that the fake website, Calìbra.com, isn’t associated with the digital asset or the social media giant. The fake website is exploiting a strategy that uses unicode characters, that look similar to regular characters, to trick people…

Jabra’s Elite 85h ANC headphones can drown out noise for days

Working for TNW is awesome, but, sadly, they don’t have an office in India. So I work from home, cafes, or coworking spaces. That means there’s a lot of noise around me And while I prefer Bluetooth earbuds like OnePlus’s Bullet Wireless, I often think it’d be nice to have a pair of noise-canceling cans. And that’s where Jabra’s Elite 85h wireless headphones come in. Announced at CES, these premium active noise cancelation (ANC) headphones are comfortable and long lasting. Plus, they charge with a USB-C cable. After several days of usage, I found the Jabra Elite 85h a great alternative…

CHEAP: Spit in the face of cleaning with 20% off iRobot’s Roomba 690 vacuum

Jun24

Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! Although there are a few oddballs out there, very few of us like cleaning. Yes, the aftermath can be hugely pleasurable, but could you imagine how much better life would be if stuff just got magically clean? Well, that’s the experience you can get with the famous Roomba series of robotic vacuums from iRobot. And — surprise, surprise, surprise — there’s a great deal running on one of these excellent models: the Roomba 690. Normally, the Roomba 690 retails for $349.99, but not today. Not today.…

ING Bank: Bullish cryptocurrency markets are negatively impacting the US dollar

The cryptocurrency markets are on fire and major financial institution ING has taken notice, going as far as predicting the latest bull run could negatively impact the value of the US dollar. “Strong commodity (and cryptocurrency) prices, plus sharply falling US dollar hedging costs should keep the dollar on the soft side this week,” warned ING‘s global head of strategy Chris Turner in his latest foreign exchange analysis. Turner’s right: the price of the DXY index – which measures the performance of the US dollar against a basket of international currencies – has struggled to find momentum moving into the new week of trade.…

Raspberry Pi founder Eben Upton on building a computer for industrial users

Posted In: Around the Web, Design & Dev, Plugged

The Raspberry Pi foundation today announced the launch of its latest model – the Raspberry Pi 4. This pocket-sized computer isn’t an iterative improvement on previous devices, but rather a radical re-imagining that sees the company transcend its spiritual homeland, the education market. My colleague Ivan Mehta covered the announcement earlier today, but here’s the Cliff Notes: it comes with a more powerful quad-core Broadcom processor, which can power up to two 4K displays via its dual micro-HDMI ports. Buyers can also choose to configure the computer with up to 4GB of RAM, which should greatly improve performance. The Raspberry Pi…
