An AMA of an 82 year-old who never used the Web will remind you how pure the internet can be

82yearold first internet
Do you remember the first time you logged onto the Web and how innocent everything felt? My first interaction with the internet was back in 1998 when my cousin bought his first computer and showed me where to find free online games. It became so addicting that my uncle eventually had to install software to limit our daily internet use. The Web has changed dramatically since 1998, or even 2010. So imagine if this week was the first time you accessed the internet: How would you react to the countless memes, Web lingoes, apps, viral videos or wild obsessions over #LlamaWatch or…

Bitcoin
One of the most popular BitTorrent clients around, uTorrent, has been under fire today after allegedly installing cyptocurrency mining software on its users’ computers without warning. It started when uTorrent community forum member “Groundrunner” noticed increased CPU loads, even while his computer was idle, after installing the most recent update to the software, build 38913. He did some digging, and noticed a piece of software called Epic Scale was now running on his computer. According to Epic Scale’s Website, it solves “math problems for weather prediction, physics simulations, cryptography (including cryptocurrency mining) and more.” The problem-solving and mining are meant to help several charities. Epic Scale says it does not track…

The US Department of Justice has charged three men with hacking into US email service providers in what it calls “one of the largest reported data breaches in US history.” Assistant Attorney General Caldwell said in a statement, “the defendants allegedly made millions of dollars by stealing over a billion email addresses from email service providers.” Acting U.S. Attorney Horn said in the same statement, “the scope of the intrusion is unnerving, in that the hackers didn’t stop after stealing the companies’ proprietary data—they then hijacked the companies’ own distribution platforms to send out bulk emails and reaped the profits from email…

Samsung’s ATIV One 7 Curved was announced at CES, and will finally be going on sale this Sunday for $1,299. And if you have a Samsung smartphone, you can pair the two for one-tap music playback as well as answering messages and calls on the computer. It boasts a 27-inch 1080p curved display and a Core i5 processor with 8GB of RAM, 1 TB storage and runs Windows 8.1. The curvature of the screen offers 178-degree viewing angles. The PC…

What now feels like a very long time ago was actually only a handful of years. Back in 2010, Canonical knew exactly what its future would hold and had a plan on how to get there. It wanted to build one OS for all devices: phones, TVs, tablets, the desktop, servers and beyond. It wanted the device to be irrelevant and the OS to be agnostic. Unfortunately, while the company knew exactly what it was doing, its loyal Ubuntu desktop user base didn’t. The past The desktop and server versions were the only thing that existed back then, and Canonical wasn’t ready to share its…
