marketing
George Deeb is the Managing Partner at Chicago-based Red Rocket Ventures, a growth consulting, advisory and executive staffing firm based in Chicago.  It is a sad, but familiar, story in startup land. An entrepreneur raises a limited amount of funds, plows it entirely into building out their product, and has no gas left in the tank for driving users to the site once the product is complete. Then they go out hat-in-hand to the venture community looking for additional growth capital, without achieving the proof-of-concept required by the venture investors (in the form of initial user adoption). Hence, leaving them out-of-luck with the VCs and scratching…

At long last, Opera has finally added bookmark syncing to its browser across desktop and mobile devices. The new feature requires users to log in to their desktop or mobile browser with an Opera account. Once you’re signed in, you can access your bookmarks across all your devices. Bookmark sync has been available on competing browsers like Firefox and Chrome for a while now. Still, it’s nice to know that Opera is trying to keep up with the times — even if they’re pretty late to the game. ➤ Opera [Windows | OS X| Linux | Android | Opera Mini for iOS] Read next: Opera’s data-saving Android app…

Storygami
Each week we’re profiling one company that has been selected for Boost – our early-stage startup growth program. Catch up with these companies in person at The Next Web Conference Europe on April 23 & 24. Video is great for telling stories, but it can’t always tell the whole story. Storygami is on a mission to change that. It lets you easily embed related content like text, images and social media streams into Web video to increase viewer engagement. You could use Storygami to add background to a news bulletin, share related articles in documentaries, show product close-ups in a video…

AplWatch-3Up-Features-577x310
Apple promised 18 hours of battery life with “typical usage” from the Apple Watch during yesterday’s launch event, but dig deeper on its site and you’ll find a breakdown of how the new device will fare in a variety of scenarios. In testing for different types of user, Apple says it used a preproduction 38mm Apple Watch paired with an iPhone, both running preproduction software. If you buy the 42mm model, you can expect longer battery life but the company hasn’t made test figures for it available. The All-Day Adventurer If you’re hoping to use your Apple Watch throughout the working…

The Wikimedia Foundation — the nonprofit organization behind Wikipedia — is suing the National Security Agency (NSA) and the US Department of Justice over the NSA’s mass surveillance program. It’s teaming up with eight other organizations, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International USA, to challenge the NSA’s use of upstream surveillance to spy on correspondence between Web users in the US and overseas. Wikimedia says that the intelligence agency’s methods captures communications by its users and staff, thereby violating their privacy and “threatening the intellectual freedom that is central to people’s ability to create and understand knowledge.” The organization says…
