We’ve seen a few apps that promise new ways of unlocking your Mac, but Tether, a new free app, might be the easiest yet simply because you don’t need to do anything to use it. Tether is a pair of apps you install on your iPhone and Mac which detect how far your phone is from your computer using Bluetooth, and automatically locks it when it’s further than a few meters away. I tried Tether for a day and it seemed legitimately useful for my home office. I could just walk away and my Mac would lock. When I came back to…

We all love emoji, right? Well the genius’ behind this new Kickstarter project have the perfect thing for the emoji obsessive in your life. This silicone keyboard cover for your MacBook, paired with a special piece of software, puts emoji right where you need them: on your keyboard itself. This thing is ridiculous and amazing, all at the same time. With the companion software, the emoji printed on the keys are more than just good looking; they actually work! The keyboard cover and software replaces the Caps Lock key with Emoji-Lock which lets you quickly access the indicated emoji. The team…

Apple’s new MacBook reiterates how desperately we need battery innovation

Apple yesterday announced a new MacBook that’s thinner and lighter than the existing MacBook Air. It’s got some impressive new features, but Apple’s focus on making things smaller still has a barrier: batteries. The picture above illustrates just how much companies like Apple have managed to shrink the actual computer parts of a device. It seems crazy to me that the part of the laptop that actually does the heavy lifting doesn’t even take a quarter of the space and that somehow, after all these years, batteries still take the bulk of the room. The battery problem isn’t simply a longevity…

One cable to rule them all: Everything you should know about the new MacBook’s USB-C port

MacBook USB-C Feat Img
In case you were living under a rock yesterday, Apple unveiled a new MacBook. Not a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air (though it’s thinner than either!), just a good old MacBook for the masses. Because it’s so darn thin, Apple had to reduce the number of ports to only two: a headphone jack, and a new USB Type-C port (USB-C for short). There’s not even a separate power connector; USB-C handles that. Before you go thinking Apple’s invented another proprietary connector, however, that’s not quite it – the company worked in conjunction with several others, including Intel and Microsoft, to…
