The science of food: How GE is using Big Data to make sense of what you’re eating

GE_BBQ_Research_set_1-1012
It would be a crime to visit Austin without sampling the local barbecue here, so we stopped by General Electric’s BBQ Research Lab at SXSW to see how the team is using GE technology to make sense of all things food. Greeting the entrance of the outdoor “lab” is the 12-foot BBQ smoker which contains multiple sensors to record temperature, humidity, smoke velocity and meat temperature in real time. GE said by applying its technology in a generalized use case like cooking, it hopes to demonstrate the power of sensors and data by creating the scientifically perfect rack of ribs and brisket.…

The difference between perseverance and stubbornness

One day I found myself at an event organized by the founder of a company I had some shares in. He was all excited and had invited a few dozen people to do the first test of his technology on an audience larger than two people. After explaining some details he started the test. Another shareholder sat there alongside me and watched the whole thing crash and burn. The technology didn’t work, people were confused or annoyed and before we knew it, most of them had left to a bar downstairs. I looked at the other shareholder and said something like ‘you win…

Arrange your iPhone’s icons any way you want with Makeovr

Screen Shot 2015-03-15 at 9.41.14 am
One of the biggest gripes I have with the iPhone 6 Plus is that there’s no way to permanently bring my homescreen icons closer to the bottom of the giant screen. With Makeovr, a new web app, there’s finally a way. Makeovr is fairly straightforward; take a screenshot of an empty page of your homescreen and upload it, then it’ll help you create empty icons that match the wallpaper so that you can arrange your icons in any format you like. It’s a total workaround of iOS’ limitations, but provides a decent enough way to create custom icon layouts on your…

Meerkat’s CEO isn’t worried about Twitter limiting its access – it has plenty of ways to grow

Meerkat
When news broke yesterday that Twitter was limiting hot live-streaming app Meerkat‘s access to its social graph, mere hours after confirming it had acquired yet-to-launch rival Periscope, there was a near-audible gasp across the media and tech community that has taken Meerkat to its hearts this month. So what does Meerkat do next? I met up with CEO Ben Rubin at SXSW to find out. Some key takeaways: While Twitter has cut automatic follows for people’s Twitter user graph, Meerkat is looking at other pathways to grow, including Facebook Messenger and users’ address books – a move that will expand the…

Samsung livestreamed the birth of a child in virtual reality

Here’s something I never expected to write: Samsung today announced that it has streamed the very first child birth in virtual reality. The company wanted to help Alison Larke and her husband Jason, who couldn’t be at the birth of his third child due to work commitments in Australia. Samsung allowed him to watch the entire thing live-streamed in virtual reality on the Gear VR, which meant he could look around and experience it as if he was there. Samsung says that he was able to experience the birth in real time even though he was 4,000 miles away for work, which is…
