Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. If you’ve ever tried to use Microsoft’s built-in virtual assistant for Windows 10, Cortana, thinking it would function like Amazon’s Alexa, you were probably disappointed. That’s not to say Cortana doesn’t have its strong suits, but the experiences are vastly different. Luckily, Amazon‘s made it quite easy to use Alexa with your PC. First off: point your browser here to get Alexa for free on the Microsoft store. You’ll likely have to log into your…

Scientists teleported quantum data into the flawed heart of a diamond

Jun28

A team of scientists from Yokohama National University recently became the first researchers to teleport a photon into the vacuous space inside of a flaw within a diamond. Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. Pride Month is almost over, but that’s no reason to stick to non-rainbow-infused games for the next eleven months. Yes, LGTBQ-friendly games exist — there are dozens of them on the Steam store, provided you know how to look for them. Steam is often like a hybrid between a shopping mall and a battlefield. There are so many games being released onto the platform — AAA, indie, and everything in between — that finding what…

The brutally honest guide to a career in tech journalism

Jun28

Tech journalism is often regarded as an exciting and attractive career. And you know what? It absolutely is. But it’s also a damn tough business to enter. Getting your foot in the door is hard. Making enough money to live is even harder. Next month marks my third year at TNW. I’ve been working in tech journalism in some capacity for almost eight years now. And honestly? It’s been a wild ride. From time to time, I receive emails from strangers asking how I got my job. I’m always happy to point them in the direction of TNW’s open vacancies,…
