The bigger they are, the harder they fall — WeWork and Uber’s fight against reality

Jul01

We now know that Uber is worth one of two amounts: precisely $68.95bn or absolutely anything. Never before has a company both been a worthless empty assetless cathedral to hope over unit economics and an invaluable first mover stake in the future of all human mobility.   San Francisco is a city built on hope against all odds and it shows. A place where anything that seems to struggle to make profit is immediately validated by the exceptional nature of Amazon. Where any company that’s making a profit is seen to show a lack of ambition or imagination. A city with…

There’s now an AI to prevent cats from bringing dead animals into your house

We cover a lot of stuff related to AI. There are some fascinating models that can create talking head videos based on just one picture, or manipulate an image with just one click. But now there’s a fascinating model that can stop your cat from bringing dead prey home. Ben Hamm, creator of the model and an engineer at Amazon, noticed his cat often brought dead animals back to the house as a ‘gift.’ As a cat person myself, I can totally relate to Hamm’s problem. While the cat got rid of rats to his relief, it’s not pleasant to…

Ricoh GRIII review: A great street photography camera, but far from perfect

Jul01

Ricoh might not be the first brand that pops to mind when thinking about photography, but its GRII camera won the hearts of photographers around the world with its excellent image quality, sturdy but stylish build, and enviously compact body. To many, it was – and still is – the best alternative to exorbitantly priced Leica street-shooters and bulky DSLRs. In fact, its stellar reputation has kept it among the top options for street photographers years after its release in 2015. So when earlier this year Ricoh announced the successor to this iconic piece of tech, the GRIII, I knew…

Moonday Mornings: Facebook scammers target UAE investors with fake Bitcoin ads

Welcome to another week and another Moonday Mornings. It’s Hard Fork’s wrap-up of the weekend’s top cryptocurrency and blockchain headlines. Let’s get to it. 1. Facebook has removed a number of fake adverts that falsely claim Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed of the United Arab Emirates has set up a Bitcoin trading platform. Scammers tricked thousands into investing into the get-rich-quick scheme using imagery of the Crown Prince, local news reports. It’s unclear how much money scammers were able to generate. 2. Redditors that use the Brave browser will reportedly be able to tip each other in cryptocurrency in the near…

After Europe, Google under fire for ‘Android dominance’ in India

Jul01
by Sindy Cator on July 1, 2019 at 7:58 am
Posted In: Around the Web, Google

After facing billion dollar fines in the EU for abusing its dominance to favor its own services, the internet giant has now been caught in the cross hairs of Indian antitrust watchdog. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has found that Google may have misused its market share in Android in the country to prevent device manufacturers from opting for alternate versions of its mobile operating system. According to Reuters, which reviewed a 14-page order from CCI, “Google’s restrictions on manufacturers seemed to amount to imposition of ‘unfair conditions’ under India‘s competition law.” Google’s Android is the most widely used…
