Although the FCC published the text of its new Net Neutrality guidelines a month ago, it wasn’t until now that opponents could take legal action against the new legislation. The new rules were today published in the Federal Register – essentially a journal of US federal regulations – which is a necessary step before companies can take an agency like the FCC to court over new proposed rules. Today’s publication means you can expect numerous lawsuits as carriers, cables companies and other internet providers move to prevent some of the incoming legislation before they officially go into effect on June…

Kids who code
At a hackathon in Philadelphia last November, one of the best ideas came not from a professional designer, but from a nine-year-old. The boy pitched an app that combines carpooling with Uber-like capabilities, allowing a private network of families to share driving. The idea came from the boy simply identifying a problem in his life – not being able to attend after-school clubs because, like many kids, he has two working parents – but came backed up with a solid business plan. “It was voted best business model of the entire hackathon,” says Kwame Anku, director of strategic development at…

Apple has launched a significant update to Final Cut Pro, its flagship professional non-linear video editing app. Companion apps Compressor and Motion have also received updates. This marks the 15th free update to FCP since Apple’s radical re-do of the app in mid-2011. It comes, as do many high-profile video app updates — at the annual convention of the National Association of Broadcasters in Las Vegas. Final Cut Pro, now at version 10.2, tackles a number of video features such as 3D titles, a range of advanced effects involving color and masking, additional support for key camera formats, an assortment of new features designed to…

0508_500
500 Startups, a global tech startup accelerator and investment program, has launched a new $10 million fund today. It’s aimed at businesses that need to ramp up their marketing activity after gaining early traction. Rather than costing startups a specific amount of equity, the funding will be provided in exchange for market convertible notes, depending on the company and size of the deal, Mat Johnson, ‘distribution hacker’ at 500 Startups told TNW. The DistroFund will initially invest somewhere between $100,000 and $250,000 in post-seed companies over the next 18 months. Half of the fund will be reserved for investments in companies…

bitcoin safety lock

This post is part of a series titled, ‘Future of Communications,’ and is brought to you by Nexmo.

Bitcoin (BTC) is a digital currency that can be instantly transferred to anyone in the world. It was designed using cryptography to control the creation and transfer of money as opposed to relying on a central authority. Since Bitcoins operate without a central authority, supply is regulated by software as well as agreement by the network, and cannot be manipulated by any government, bank, organization or individual. The original software was designed by Satoshi Nakamoto, a pseudonym, under the MIT license and is open source. Some advantages of the currency include cheaper costs of sending money overseas, fast transactions (faster…
