Quotable

"Now that Iceland's volcanic ash has been spewing ash over Europe as long as Noah's flood, and humans have endured this challenge as well or better than in times past, who will author a legend about it for future generations to tell as their biblical testament? Or will it be authored by a billion monkeys on a billion keyboards?" ~ Yasha Harari

FRANCE-CAFE-RESTAURANT-PARIS-FEATURE
Pep Rosenfeld is co-founder of comedy theater Boom Chicago and Boom Chicago Creative in Amsterdam. He loves both nerd chic and chic nerds, and can be seen hosting events where they meet — like #TNW2015. Like so many members of the world of theater and comedy, I started out as a waiter. I was a good waiter too, serving fancy veal scallopine to fancy people at a fancy Italian place just outside of slightly less fancy Chicago. But unlike many in the world of theater and comedy, I started a company, one that has thrived for over 20 years. It turns out that the skills that make…

rift2 (1)
It’s official: Oculus Rift is finally getting a consumer version, in the first quarter of 2016. According to a post by Oculus Rift today, the new headset will build on the current Crescent Bay prototype that features 3D spatial audio. The company hasn’t detailed anything beyond the release window, such as price, what it’ll look like or what capabilities it’ll actually ship with. The news that Oculus is finally shipping a consumer version is exciting for gamers, many of whom have purchased the developer kits to try for themselves ahead of the consumer release because the company previously didn’t provide any hint of…

It’s made up of 16 vastly differing initiatives, which aims to help the European Union’s member countries work together digitally and compete on a stronger footing with Silicon Valley The policies range from making it more efficient and affordable to ship physical goods when they’re purchased online, to a proposal pushing to end geo-blocking of content and services between European countries. The Commission also plans to further investigates search engines, social media platforms and app stores to ensure they are not abusing dominant positions. That follows its…

Ryanair’s app shows why ‘friendly’ error messages suck

Attempting to check-in for a Ryanair flight this morning reminded me why faux-friendly error messages in apps are terrible: Yes, that's incredibly useful. Thanks @Ryanair pic.twitter.com/5bg9IEIw9F — Mic Wright. (@brokenbottleboy) May 6, 2015 The dominance of chirpy ‘oh dear’-style messages when something goes wrong with an app or service can probably be traced back to Google, which has popularized the quirky apology. While there’s obviously an argument for making error messages human and understandable, as opposed to a incomprehensible code and some bloodless language, the over-familiar approach often ends up making users even more frustrated. In the case of the Ryanair example,…
