creativity
Recently, I was out to dinner with my wife and a few old friends from my student days at UCLA’s film school—successful writers and directors for film and television, some of the most creative people I know. I was telling them how excited I was to have gotten a ticket to the Eyeo Festival, an annual event about creative coding and the creative potential of data that always sells out in minutes. My friends were perplexed: how could I (and all these other people hungry for Eyeo tickets) possibly be so excited about data? Too often, data is viewed skeptically…

Twitch, the live streaming service that connects gamers and viewers, is now available as a channel on Roku devices. Admittedly, if you’re not a gamer, the prospect of spending hours staring at someone else playing a video game probably isn’t very enticing. Nonetheless, gaming is big business nowadays, and the rise of e-sports has been fuelled by services like Twitch. And besides, with 1.5 million broadcasters on the service, surely you can find something you’d want to watch? Roku owners can update their devices via the Channel Store, and if you don’t have a Roku, you can still watch along…

Today, I found something dreams are made of – the PizzaTime clock. This is no ordinary clock though. Sure, it tells the time and has an alarm, but it also orders you pizza from Dominos. The clock was developed by Artefact, a technology product design company, as part of the Intel “Internet of Things” Roadshow. It connects to the Domino’s Pizza Tracker API to let you place and track your order. The Roadshow hosts developers, students and hackers who present products that have been built using the Intel IoT developer kit which consists of a small development board with built-in Wi-Fi and…

Stores are becoming a mere showrooms. John Lunn, Paypal’s Global Developer Director, talks about the future of shopping. The world is changing and we are arguably living in the most revolutionary time ever since the birth of commerce, with changes in the way consumers shop and retailers operate. The internet has a great influence over brick and mortar stores, too. People are using online technology to decide what are they going to buy in the real world. In fact, 65 percent of purchases that are made in real world are researched on the internet. This leads to stores slowly changing into…

Sunrise for iOS received a big update today that brings a new third-party keyboard to the platform for the first time. It’s the best use I’ve found yet for iOS’ new keyboard functionality that does something more interesting than just typing letters. Called “Sunrise Meet,” the feature adds a button to your keyboard across your entire iOS device for quickly suggesting times you’re free based on your calendar. For example, you might be sending an iMessage to a friend and want to quickly arrange a time to meet. You can open the Sunrise keyboard, tap some times that suit, add a…
