She was a high-flying international human right’s lawyer who worked with refugees. Then she was found dead on a beach in East Sussex. What happened in-between is a story of crime and punishment, and a question of how justice works in the social media era. Simone Burns, who is also known as Simone O’Broin, first achieved international infamy in the business class cabin of an Air India 777. She’d been drinking. Three bottles of wine had hit her like a freight train, and the cabin crew decided to stop serving her, provoking a fiery backlash from the intoxicated lawyer. Burns…

India claims its Aadhaar push is for the ‘good’ of people despite serious privacy concerns

Last year, India’s top court ruled that the central government’s national identification system – Aadhaar – doesn’t violate the privacy of citizens. Now, there are three major developments on this front that might put privacy activists on high alert. First, India’s parliament passed an amended bill on Aadhaar that allows voluntary use of the ID to open a bank account or get a SIM card and penalty for any private company if it stores Aadhaar data – a step to curb frequent data leaks. Then the government’s chief economic advisor, K Subramanian, said in this year’s Economic Survey report that a master…

But, you know what? Specialization is overrated. Rather than pursuing one narrow programming path, why not learn a bunch? The Pay What You Want: 20-Course Programming Bundle is a kitchen sink-sized programming package that jams in just about any web development discipline you could ever want. And rather than charging you an Ivy League sum for all that schooling, it’s actually on sale now at any price you want to pay.

Humans and AI will work better when they start learning from each other

In the age of big data and breathtaking advances of artificial intelligence, social infrastructure promotes digital engagement and active presence. Digital democracy propagates the participation of a growing number of users to interact with institutions and services, ensuring that decisions made by AI-powered digital tools reflect human values. Immersed in automation, many choices we make include some form of a computationally-modeled process. This transformation from manual to programmed behavior has started with the introduction of recommendation systems to find similar products according to users’ preferences. However, today’s AI systems go beyond imposing suggestions and know pretty well what we do and what…

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro has ordered that every branch of the Banco de Venezuela should allow citizens to buy and trade El Petro, the state-issued cryptocurrency he’s so intent on pursuing.  “I hereby order that every branch of Banco de Venezuela opens exchange desks so that everyone can transact with El Petro and start using it,” said Maduro on Wednesday.  “This is the new world where we can lead by example. We can do this from Venezuela. The world is looking at us,” hed added.  As expected, Maduro touched on the sanctions imposed by the US government on the country.…
