Instagram’s cool questioned as it starts emailing users with ‘Highlights’

Instagram
Instagram has started sending out ‘Highlights’ emails to some users. The emails, er, ‘highlight’ things they may have missed from accounts that they follow. As TechCrunch’s Josh Constine, who spotted the development, noted, it could help draw lapsed users back to the app. “Some people will surely bristle at the idea of receiving more email, especially one’s they didn’t explicitly sign up for. However, Highlights could solve an issue common amongst maturing social networks that show a live, reverse chronological feed of posts. It impacts networks like Instagram and Twitter, but not relevancy-sorted streams like Facebook’s.” So it’s a sign of…

How Beatport hopes to become the home of electronic music

Beatport
SFX Entertainment hopes to turn its subsidiary Beatport into the home of electronic music, its COO Greg Consiglio declared on stage at International Music Summit’s latest trade conference, IMS Ibiza. While the inefficient, environmentally dubious practice of exchanging a piece of dead tree with someone else definitely needs to end, I’m increasingly convinced that some clever piece of proprietary technology just isn’t needed. None of the ‘we’ll replace business cards’ apps have ever taken off because they generally require a critical mass of users that it’s incredibly hard to accumulate. Still, at some point around 18 months ago I stopped taking cards to events with me and opted for…

Why writing is like flossing

writingontheweb
Believe it or not, building an effective writing habit is just like regularly flossing your teeth. Or at least that’s what Stanford University habits guru BJ Fogg believes. Fogg is interested in how we get in the habit of doing things and thinks that the strength of a habit is defined by the size of the decision involved. And what that means is that we put off big decisions in favour of the small ones. He also thinks that habits are things that you don’t really think about – or not in a conscious way. He says: “If you’re deciding…
